soc_puppet: Words "Humorless Feminist" in pink (Humorless Feminist)
[personal profile] soc_puppet
So hey! I could use some help putting this together.

I've still got thirteen four spaces left to fill on it :/ I don't get out of my nice feminist fandom space very often, either, so I'm not that familiar with the usual arguments. Any suggestions? I'm sure there's some nice ones about homophobia out there.

Starting card two; nineteen spaces left. I'll fill it up with repeats if I don't get enough.

Edit: Updated card!

Edit 2: If I run out of space on this card, I'm up to making a second, so no need to hold back :3b

Concrit in general is also A+

Edit 3: Card one complete! Starting card two...

Edit 4: It has been pointed out to me that some of the squares include what could be legitimate complaints. I'll be editing those, and possibly others, to better reflect the intended theme, and will upload a new Card One with the next version of Card Two. Please point out any you think are problematic, especially if I miss them on the first edit.

Edit 5: Okay, let's give this another shot! Six spots left on Card Two, though I'm ready to fill them up with repeats if I don't get enough significantly different responses.

Edit 6: Final draft of Card Two for tonight! All the squares are filled in, but I had to pull a number of those out of my ass, so I'm definitely still taking both concrit and suggestions. I just won't be doing any more editing until tomorrow.

G'night -_-b

Edit 7: 7/2/2013: Slightly altered versions, versions that say "slash" instead of "yaoi", and higher quality versions for print are now all available here.

I don't like yuri/lesbian characters because that's just fanservice for men, as seen in the recent K/S shipperwank?

…Okay, now I'm starting to see a lot of squares where… I mean, they're often used as excuses for misogyny! But they definitely aren't indicative of misogyny, and it's starting to make me very uncomfortable. Especially the ones that pin the blame on the series, because there are a lot of series where female characters are handled badly or there… aren't a lot of them as compared to the boys. The inherent misogyny in that case wouldn't necessarily be on the fans for calling the source material out on that, you know?

Here via [livejournal.com profile] woodburner's lj, I also reccommend:

"She's such a Mary-Sue!"

and possibly

"I ship yaoi to support the gay rights movement!"

and also

"I'm not misogynist - it's just that the writers wrote her character really badly!"

Really? I usually hear that het is nothing but cliche romance novel fluff instead. *gags*

Also! "I slash because it subverts heteronormative gender roles; het is too entrenched in gender-based power dynamics."

Or: "Slash is just more well-written."

Yes, I edited to fix a homonym. I'm that anal-retentive. ;0

How about "they only wrote her to spite slashers/me/all fandom"?

Or (one I swear I read ages ago) "her breasts will just get in the way." No, I have no idea why this would be automatic death to a relationship. Or what sizes breasts they were imagining.

Ah, "I don't care if a guy is weak and fragile, I just don't like weak women". Often found among fans of yaoi series that are exactly the same as the most awful misogynistic dubious-to-no-consent-played-as-romance shoujo ever written--except, of course, that the part of the woman is now played by male shotabait (HE'S 22 YEARS OLD, NO REALLY). And it would rearrange the laws of the universe if said shotabait ever took the penetrative/enveloped role during sex.

And I don't know if it's different enough from what you already have, but how about "I'm a straight woman, so it's just natural for me to be physically disgusted by the sight of breasts and vagina". Often known as the EW, TITS comments on 4chan /y/ and /cm/. And maybe we could include here any and all use of the word "vagoo", and FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, WOMEN POSTING ON 4CHAN, STOP REFERRING TO YOURSELVES AS 'CUMDUMPSTERS', IT'S NOT "IRONIC", YOU DON'T KNOW THE MEANING OF "IRONIC".

Also, "But this character is obviously gay, just look how girly he is!" may or may not exactly fall under the topic of the card, but I think it counts.

Something which is really cool in a bingo card if you can swing it is having adjacent squares contradicting each other, eg:

I don't like yuri : I ship yaoi to support the gay rights movement : I'm a straight girl, so of course girls are less interesting

She's just not good enough for him : She's just too good for him

I hold female characters to high standards: She's a Mary sue: She's too boring

Girl parts are gross/only men are good enough for other men: She's totally antifeminist the way she clings to him: any of the "I don't like female characters" ones: There just aren't enough female characters!

The very first square throws me off, because... that's not actually a misogynist statement? One can dislike a character solely for her character. (I can't stand Relena in the Gundam Wing series, still, and it's not because I want to pair off Heero with a guy! And I really love two of the other female characters, and wish they'd had more screen time. Or even fanfic-screentime. Noin and Hilde rock. For that matter, I like Relena fine in the OVA, it's just series!Relena whom I find hard to bear.)

Maybe the bingo card could clarify that this is being applied to multiple female characters, i.e. that, in spite of the protest, gender is the only factor in common for "disliked" characters? ---> "I don't hate women, I just don't like any of the women in this show" or "I don't hate women, I just can't stand (any of) the female characters" ?

Other than that, welp. I'm having a grand old time sitting here having flashbacks to GW fandom and my early forays into yaoidom! *cringing*

(All I can say for myself is: at least I was mostly in the "BECAUSE IT'S HOT, DUH" camp rather than the "let me explain to you how my subjective preference is the One True Interpretation" camp... *wince*)

What about the meta-level version of "She's rooting for yaoi, anyway" -- "the author likes yaoi, so OBVIOUSLY they're meant to be a couple!" / "The author has done a yaoi doujin, so OBVIOUSLY she means them to get together!"

(Because, y'know, authors are only allowed to write in one genre, ever, as long as it's the one YOU like. Her thirteen other het-or-gen works don't count when it's Teh Yaoiz at stake! You, the True Fan, can read her mind and definitively answer for the author's intent.)

This might be what the "subtext" square was aiming at, but I couldn't be sure, so I figured I'd throw it in. :D
