Moving Forward

In a bid to spend less time stressing over AI bullshit, I'm going to try and focus more on other things. I will probably bug some of my staff friends for updates in the next week or so, and possibly also during/after the con, but in the mean time I also need to distract myself so I don't make myself sick over That Bullshit. I've got a bunch of crochet projects I've been meaning to get to, and honestly I might spend some of my new "free time" on Language Town, but also...

I managed to bring up what happened on the official WisCon staff communicating/planning website, and was not only comforted over what went down, but warmly welcomed to continue on as staff ♥ I'm hoping to start brainstorming ideas for new Access projects right away!

I also told my boss that I might not be needing AnimeIowa weekend off this year, though I'm going to give it another couple of weeks to make sure, which she agreed was a good idea. (Incidentally, she and all of my coworkers were very supportive ♥) I don't think it's likely that they'll beg me to come back, or that there'll be a hostile takeover and someone with sense manages to enforce actual good anti-Covid guidelines, but I'm not going to completely rule out the possibility of the latter, at least. That said, since I'm not expecting to be at AI this year, and I wasn't able to make it in person to WisCon, it did occur to me on the way home: I could take a trip that weekend to Madison and stay at the hotel WisCon uses to get a better idea of the city and the space where the con takes place. It's not the same as being at the con in person, but it would still give me more information to work with, and would be a good distraction that weekend. I'll have to give it some more thought, and again, a miracle might still happen in the next couple of weeks, but it's definitely an idea.

And it's over

Phew! I tell ya, WisCon is a very different beast from AnimeIowa. And that's just from the virtual con!

I managed to go to a handful or so of virtual panels over the weekend, and ended up feeling exhausted every time I attended two in a row. A good chunk of this was the fact that I'd also frequently follow along on the con Discord channel for the panel I was attending, so it was not only like attending two panels at the same time, it was also like I was in an actual conference for at least one of the panels.

I never did figure out how to sign up as a Production Assistant over the weekend, though I took the training in the first time slot it was offered. I feel a little guilty about that, since it was close to the only during-con (con-current?) volunteering I could have managed over the con, what with me staying home over Covid worries. I did end up volunteering to be a last-minute panelist for a discussion about planning and hosting conventions in the plague times, though, so that should make up for it a bit.

While the panel I really wanted to go to on Sunday, Celebrating Jewish SFF, was not available virtually or streamed, some kinda attendee did take notes for the majority of it and was gracious enough to post them to the Discord channel for it! Crocheted Shulamit and Aviva may not have been able to possibly meet any Mangoverse fans in person, but I did still manage to pick up some recs that way 👍

All things told, I think I'll at least try to stay on as WisCon staff. I don't know if I'll stay as Access lead, but regardless of whether I do or not, having a whole year to plan for the con instead of jumping in a mere month beforehand should certainly help! Now I just need to find out into whose ear I need to drop the idea for a staff table in the dealer's room...

Also, hello to my new Dreamwidth circlemates from WisCon! Er. Followers? Mutuals? Friends? I'm not sure Dreamwidth has a good catch-all term for "person who has me added to their reading circle, whether or not I have also granted them access to locked posts". Something to investigate.

It is done!

It's official! I've effectively signed up to be WisCon's Accessibility Lead for this year! I've also managed to mostly stomp my imposter syndrome to death with my hooves, but anxiety remains 😛

Next up, I should email some folks from AI's parent organization; I believe I remember hearing about perks for advertising "our" cons at other conventions, and it sounds like I might have the time to do exactly that at WisCon.

Aaaack!

Got home from an AnimeIowa meeting today to see this post on [community profile] access_fandom.

I... want the job. I've only done about 60% of what they list as needing done, but the post says they have good notes and documentation for the rest, and last I knew WisCon was pretty much the gold standard of accessibility for SFF cons. (I am no longer sure how it compares to furry cons, as of, like, yesterday.) It would be an incredible learning opportunity.

It would also be potentially expensive, not to mention more than a bit stressful, and as a bonus my boss is on vacation for the next week so I can't talk to her about it.

I passed the link on to the two people who asked me about running Accessibility stuff for conventions, because above all else, I want WisCon to be able to keep its standard of accessibility for its attendees.

In the mean time, I need to shove it out of my brain, so I can sleep. I've got work tomorrow!
