Things to talk about

Last night, as I was fighting for sleep, one of the lines from the 1973 Charlotte's Web kept circling in my mind: "When your stomach is empty and your mind is full, it's hard to fall asleep." Well, my stomach wasn't empty, but mind was considerably full. Still, I thought it would be better to at least try and rest, so I could make it through today, and possibly write about it when I could.

Sadly, I'm afraid I've got rather a bit on my plate today, and probably not enough spoons to make it through everything I was thinking about, but I do still want to bring things up. In no particular order, here are the four things that made falling asleep difficult last night. (I'll try and get around to writing about them sometime soon.)

----

* Social anxiety and fandom; there's a very thought-provoking post on it here. I haven't seen all of today's comments, but it did start me thinking, and I can see a lot of myself in here - and a lot of places I'm only borderline. I do intend to comment on the actual post eventually, but again, spoons need to go where they need to go, so it's not happening before I get this post up :/

Possible trigger warning for people involved in the fanfic trigger warning debate. (Wow, that felt weird to type.) If you go, I ask you: please keep in mind how feminism works. No matter which individuals brought the topic up, it's one that affects more than just them. Consider how what you may say would affect the collective.

* I'm planning to finally start the "I Could Have Done It Better" series! Inspired by GateFail - and of all the weekends that had to go down on, of course it was AnimeIowa weekend, sigh - I'll be talking about how certain elements in various sci-fi series and movies could have been handled better, and would have, if I had been in charge. I am not saying that I could have done better with them in terms of quality, necessarily. What I am trying to say is that I could have done it in a way that hurt fewer people.

I'll probably be starting with Avatar. (Yes, I do plan to address the Pocahontas plot summary comparison.)

* Via [livejournal.com profile] jimhines, I learn not infrequently of feminist issues in the speculative fiction industry (sci-fi, fantasy, horror, that sort of thing). While I tend to agree with a great deal of the commentary in and generated by his posts, there are a couple things that keep coming up/being posted that I don't actually agree with, and I intend to make a post of my own about them. Because it's currently taking more spoons not to talk about it than it would to deal with the consequences of talking about it. (Incidentally, my plan for dealing with the consequences is mostly "not", but that's neither here nor there.)

The issues:
1) Yes, actually, I am asking for a quota, since that is probably what it's going to take.
2) I would rather read a mediocre story by a marginalized person (or people, in the case of co-authors, etc) than a passably good story by a non-marginalized person (or people).

More detail later.

* Still working on that meme thing from the other day, though slowly. Will probably be skipping the "I don't see it" pairing in writing, tho :/

And now I'm off to make my rats' cage less stinky :Db
