Health Update
I don't think I've posted about it yet, but my psychiatrist managed to hook me up with someone to help me make sure I get and stay on some form of health coverage! Over the past few months, she helped me re-apply for Medicaid (got it!) and make optical, dental, and physical appointments.
The optical went first, and I've had two fresh pairs of glasses with a brand new prescription for over a month now. One pair has bright blue plastic frames that look super snazzy and I love, but pinch a bit too much. The other pair is silver-colored metal that fits better, and the parts around the lenses? The top is purple and the bottom is green, with the silver color showing on the bridge and where the ear pieces connect to divide the colorsโwhich makes them stealth genderqueer pride glasses ๐๐ค Every time I remember that, I lose any disappointment at not wearing my super cute plastic frames more often.
Dentist was next; I have to go through the local dental college, which means I had to go through two different appointments before even getting a cleaning scheduled. Luckily, the day I went for my first appointment part (filing paperwork and a bit of getting-to-know-you/figuring out if I would be a good fit for students (I am)), there were some openings in the schedule so they could fit me in for the second part (a more in-depth look around my mouth). My cleaning is officially sometime in February.
Physical doctor was the most recent, about two weeks ago, with fasting bloodwork last week. At my physical, my new doctor commented that my thyroids were a little swollen; since I have family history of thyroid problems on my mom's side, I ended up scheduled for a thyroid ultrasound. I went to that appointment on Friday, and after a rather physically uncomfortable half-an-hour (the position I was set up in gave me some nasty back/shoulder twinges, and had I known the ultrasound would last as long as it did, I would have tried harder to get into a comfortable position before starting) I was done.
While I was at work this morning, I got a call from the hospital. Turns out that there are a couple of "nodules" on my thyroids, and my doctor wants me to get a biopsy done to learn more. I'm going in for that on January 3rd.
Anyway, I'm still pretty young, and otherwise pretty healthy all told, so I'm fairly optimistic that I'll be able to handle whatever it turns out to be, but it still wasn't exactly the kind of news I was hoping for on Christmas Eve.
And if nothing else, better it's caught now than later.
So that's what's up for now! I'll provide an update on the thyroid thing once I know more.
