Oh, I hate it when I can't use my glasses! Sympathies.
I started buying memory metal frames some years ago to avoid that very issue. They are more expensive up front but worth it; so far my longest-lived pair has lasted me somewhere between six and eight years. (I am hard on frames, unfortunately.) Even then, the metal was still in good shape but the plastic earpiece caps were so pitted that they were starting to chafe my ears, ow.
Re: England: my reaction to that was pretty much what you'd expect from someone who likes to forget that characters named after countries exist. Also, a crocheted atlas would be completely cool, if very large.
