Fics: Peppery Duck, The Greatest Mystery, and The Cost of Good Books (all 1/1)

Fandom: Detective Conan
Summary: Conan's critique of Agasa's newest invention
For: [livejournal.com profile] candy__chan for the [livejournal.com profile] manycases1truth fic swap
Fic: Peppery Duck

Conan stared at the new contraption that Professor Agasa had rigged up. The contraption stared back, an almost frighteningly cheery grin molded onto its plastic features. "Professor," Conan said slowly. "What exactly is that?"

"It's to defend you in the bath or shower," Agasa explained. "When you squeeze it, pepper spray comes out its mouth!"

"Professor," Conan deadpanned. "It's a rubber ducky. Ignoring how out of character it would be for me to suddenly start bringing one into the bath tub, who on earth is going to attack me in there anyway?"

Agasa shrugged. "It never hurts to be prepared."

You have no idea how close I was to using I Rub My Ducky for this. (Link surprisingly worksafe, though your brain may be a different story. (It is thanks to this duck that I can no longer take the MSN Messenger ducky picture at all seriously.)) Thankfully, I couldn't come up with any ideas for it though that didn't stop me from almost typing 'rubber dicky' once or twice.

Fandom: (Same)
Summary: Genta and Mitsuhiko are having some trouble figuring something out
Fic: The Greatest Mystery

"Conan, we need your help!" Mitsuhiko pleaded, leaning over the other boy's desk. Genta, looming beside him, nodded in agreement.

"With what?" Conan asked, perplexed.

"It's this big mystery," Genta explained. "Bigger than all the other mysteries we've ever solved put together."

Conan reflected on all the cases the Detective Boys had solved over the years; some of them were pretty impressive. Genta was probably exaggerating, but now Conan's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?"

"Girls," Genta and Mitsuhiko said in unison. Mitsuhiko continued, "We just can't figure them out."

"Can you explain them to us?"

Conan sat back in his chair and let out a long breath. "Now that's a mystery even I can't solve!"

Just something short and cute (and possibly skirting a little too close to one of Icka's fics x_x I don't think it's too bad, but then again... *sigh*).

Fandom: (Also) Detective Conan
Summary: Slightly more than a trip to a bookstore.
Fic: The Cost of Good Books

"Ran-neechan?" Conan asked, toeing on his high-powered sneakers. "You ready to go? You said you'd take me to the bookstore today."

"Just a minute," Ran called back, hurrying to the foyer to slip on her own shoes. She smiled down at Conan. "Okay, let's get going."

When they got to the store, Conan glanced back at Ran one more time before rushing off to the mystery section. "I'll be right over there," she told him, pointing. Nodding, Conan trotted off.

He found the book easily enough--it had its own display, and there were plenty available--and picked out a copy before trotting over to where Ran said she'd be. The romance section? He wondered. I would've thought more in adventure or something... Ran was staring at the back of a book, her expression strangely distant and almost painful.

Conan frowned; the troubled look on her face was troubling him. Determined to put a normal expression back on her face, Conan walked up to her and tugged her shirt. "I found my book, Ran-neechan. Can we go now?"

Ran's expression flickered briefly before turning cheerful again. "Of course! Just let me pay for these..." Ran took the book from Conan's hands and walked up to the counter to pay for it, taking the one she had been looking at with her.

The walk home was uneventful, though Conan was still troubled by Ran's reaction to the book she had purchased earlier. He resolved to take a look at it as soon as he could.

He got his chance when Ran went into her room to study later that evening. Almost as if he was afraid of being caught, Conan crept up to coffee table and picked up the book Ran had bought for herself.

An American romance for a new age, the back read. Rachel had everything she could want--a loving family, a nice home, and a wonderful detective boyfriend. But when her boyfriend Jimmy gets mixed up in something too big for him to handle and goes missing, it's up to Rachel to find him and bring him back. Can her love--

Conan stopped reading there. He set the book back down carefully. Oh, he thought. So that's why.

Don't know if I managed to pull that one off too well =_= It's one of the few where the computer version is drastically different from the paper draft. Ah, well.

And no, I couldn't resist the name thing.
