For anyone who's missed it, Tumblr is slightly imploding again. It seems pretty serious this time, with the attempt to monetize people's accounts, and specifically Tumblr's blatant attempts to capitalize on people monetizing fannish content and then leave them out to dry in the event of a C&D. I understand that the site needs money to function, but uh. Yikes.

Anyway, long live Dreamwidth, my internet home.

I've filled out the feedback form they put in their announcement post with: "YOU ARE ENCOURAGING YOUR USERS TO BREAK THE LAW" on every one of their questions.

I have yet to fill out the survey; I might, but I honestly don't know if it's even worth my time at this point.

I abandoned Tumblr without a backward look when they banned NSFW content (and especially when they decided that "female-identifying nipples" was a hill they wanted to die on), so I'm watching this whole monetisation scheme unfold from a safe distance and waiting for the explosion...

I stuck with it, in part because that's where fandom mostly is these days; I had really hoped a lot more people would move when the NSFW ban took place, but not so much. There are some friends and authors I follow over there as well who aren't over here, but if enough people make the move to Dreamwidth to make the urge to check Tumblr less, uh, urgent, I may look into making RSS feeds for them instead.

The blue social sites have not been having a good time... twitter is trying to test putting dislike buttons on comments (no way that would be abused... /s).

The tumblr thing is pretty egregious though.

What do you mean "blue social sites"?

In this case, I'm fairly certain they mean both Tumblr and Twitter; since the background for the sites' logo/icon thing is blue, they're strongly associated with that color. Tumblr in particular is known as a "blue hellsite" by its userbase, and while I can't say I've been on Twitter long enough to notice anything similar, it wouldn't surprise me.

Ah. Okay.

For some reason, last night, my brain glitched and focused on the idiom of "Blue = Pornographic/Risque," and that didn't quite make sense.

Yeah, I saw that; makes me grateful I'm not on Twitter very much. I created an account for the sole purpose of communicating with someone I won podfic from in a fandom fundraiser, and really haven't done more than glance at it since 😅

But yeah, the Twitter thing is bad and has lots of potential for abuse, but Tumblr's targeting of fans and fandom content producers for profit while blatantly not caring if anything happens to the users as a result? Yikes. So much yikes.

Hasn't Tumblr changed hands since 2018? It seems cursed; it can't seem to turn a decent profit for its owner, despite all the activity on the site. While I don't agree with it, I'm not surprised the current owner is attempting to pull this craziness now.

I ditched Tumblr during the NSFW purge, and while I do miss it at times, I wouldn't change anything. Long Live Dreamwidth indeed!

Jeez, probably? It would not surprise me in the slightest. I think it went to Yahoo for millions, and then Wordpress for maybe tens or hundreds of thousands? Either way, I care very little about who owns it, except inasmuch as they want to profit off of tempting (pressuring? coercing isn't quite right...) their userbase into doing illegal things and then throwing said userbase under the bus at the first sign of trouble. I understand that Tumblr needs a source of revenue, but even if there weren't better options, they could be handling this one a whole lot better.

The NSFW ban pissed me off, but FF.net survived over a decade in spite of theirs, so in retrospect I'm not surprised that Tumblr didn't die off from it. (Also there's a number of users that I don't know where I'd find elsewhere, except maybe Twitter, and no way in hell am I spending my social media time there. I will figure out how RSS feeds work first.)
