Surprise Nibling Visit
Woke up yesterday dead certain that it was Wednesday and that I had work. In fact, I'm pretty sure I was getting ready for bed the previous night thinking that I had work in the morning.
Turns out that yesterday was Tuesday, and I did not have work, which I thankfully figured out before driving thirty miles to the bakery.
It ended up being good for another reason as well: Before I got up, my parents got a call from my brother, who had himself gotten a call from the daycare the niblings go to. Turns out that Younger Nibling had a very goopy eye and generally didn't seem to be feeling well, could he come pick them up? Well, my brother was a bit busy and couldn't get out there right away, so he called his retired parents to see if they'd be available. My parents were, in fact, available, and when Dad got to the daycare, the teachers there said, "Oh good, here's Younger Nibling. By the way, Elder Nibling has also been acting out of sorts, do you think you could take them, too?"
By the time I got up, my brother had arrived to take Younger Nibling to the doctor to get things checked out, but Elder Nibling was still chilling in the living room. I'd eaten a bowl of cereal by the time I figured out that no, I actually didn't have work yesterday, so changed clothes and got (willingly) roped into helping with Elder Nibling.
Not long after, my brother showed back up with Younger Nibling, explaining that the doctor said it was just a minor virus, and probably nothing to worry about (check back if etc). That said, would we be willing to keep an eye on Elder Nibling for a few hours, while he got Younger Nibling down for a nap and stuff?
My parents readily agreed, as did I, and I started heating up the oven for an early lunch of frozen pizzas while my brother made a quick trip back to his house (sans niblings) to pick up extra diapers for us. He was very grateful for the chance to get a break from work with only one kid to look after for a few hours. Making note of this, when he got back I checked with my parents: Would we be willing to look after Younger Nibling as well? We would! Also, we were willing to extend the time we watched the kids, since my brother said he was willing to pick them up. He was very grateful for the offer, and emptied his wallet unprompted as payment for babysitting. After he had a nice lunch with us and the kiddos, he went back home to get some rest, and my parents and I were left with the niblings.
Things went pretty well! In addition to making the pizzas, I helped keep an eye on the kids and play with them until about noon, at which point I asked if my parents minded me taking a bit of a break. (They were fine with this.) I hid in my room for about an hour and caught up on my corner of the internet, then went back upstairs to learn that Younger Nibling was napping, and Elder Nibling was doing a fantastic job of Being Very Quiet so Younger Nibling could sleep. Younger Nibling ended up sleeping another hour after I got up, which was quite nice.
Once both niblings were up, I, taking notice of the nice weather outside, conversed with my parents about possible outings. Eventually we settled on me digging up a wagon from the storage area under the garage and taking the kids on a short jaunt in that, while also walking the dog. The wagon had been rained on the night before, but I managed to set it up with a towel, a quilt, and some pillows so that the kids weren't sitting on wet wood or cushions. I pulled the wagon while my mom walked Molly and Dad got ready for an afternoon appointment. I think the kids had a pretty decent time!
Dad left for his appointment shortly before three, and the kids settled back in to playing with Duplos and books and whatever else was in toddler-reach. Mom and I kept track of them while Dad was at his appointment, and we ended up glad we hadn't decided to go to a park or something over that time, since it started raining around three-thirty.
Dad got home just before four o'clock. We watched the kids as a group for a while longer, before I offered to make dinner. I got it in the oven and was cleaning up the prep area when my brother showed up to pick up the kids. They were very happy to see him, and I think he had a good rest, too. We invited him to stay for dinner, but it was going to be in the oven another hour, and he didn't feel like staying that long—plus he was planning to take the kids to pick up their mother from work. It worked out okay, since my parents and I basically demolished the easy chicken-and-rice casserole I made, and I don't think there would have been quite enough for five adults and two toddlers 😂 I would have figured something out (I've still got some frozen appetizers that I might have thrown in the oven to supplement the meal), but I can't say I minded not having to do that little extra bit of work.
All in all, despite not going in to the bakery yesterday, I'm still pretty confident that I worked.
