DW Communities I Wish Existed

With the knowledge that I don't really have the capacity to manage and maintain another community:

- Mood Theme in a Year: Basically makes weekly posts with two or three of Dreamwidth's moods as a prompt, and participants come up with images to match those moods. Drawing, screencapping, typing, whatever. The goal is that, at the end of the year, participants will have created a custom mood theme with images for every mood.

- Mood Theme in a Hurry: Same as above, but in a shorter time frame. A month or a season would probably be good for this, especially for anyone who wants to, hmm. Collate? various moods into single images. (Like, come up with twenty images, all listed moods have to correlate to one of those images.)

- The Shitpost Office: Just a general community for making and sharing shitposts with a wider audience.

- kittens_and_spitefic: ...Okay, this one does exist, I just haven't done anything with it in a few months. I lost steam 😞 I remembering saying that I'd consider the community a success if I got at least one other poster every month, and that didn't really happen. I'm tempted to ask if people would be more motivated to post if I made all posts public by default (with users opting to community-lock posts at their own discretion), but at the same time I'm. Not really sure I'd be up for trying to jump-start the community and see it dwindle to nothing again. Maybe if Dreamwidth in general gets a huge surge of new users/activity and/or when Tumblr finally bites the dust...

I'm sorry you didn't get the response you hoped for with your comm. It can get pretty disheartening. I understand the duality of having the energy to put in the efforts, but not having the energy/strength to see them fail!! Hugs if you would like them. Making the comm periodic rather than year-long may not be a bad way to manage it, maybe.

I think low effort/shitpost style comms would be good to have on Dreamwidth, and help newcomers especially find their feet while they're more used to low-effort socmed... I just think such a comm would be a nightmare to mod and definitely not low effort for the admins, haha, so I will never be the one to start it.

Periodic has definite potential! I'd have to figure out a good time of year to do it, since I don't want it to overlap with summerofthe69, but going for a big burst over a short period of time seems like it would have better potential results (see, well, summerofthe69).


Oh, so much! If I were running no other communities and had slightly different work hours, I might consider it. As is, I think metaquotes might be the closest to some sort of Shitpost Repository, and you can't submit your own quotes there.

I know that feeling; there are so many more community ideas in my head than there is willpower to create and drive them.

Multifandom comms are especially hard, I think, because it takes an order of magnitude more members to generate the interest overlap that leads to interactions. A comm focused on a single fandom with 20-30 members will probably get a decent level of interaction, because everyone is de facto interested in the subject of each post; if 5 of them respond to any given topic, that's enough to keep the ball rolling. By contrast, a multifandom comm with 30 members might only have 1-2 people interested in each of 25 fandoms; there's a much smaller audience for any particular post, and could be insufficient to keep people posting.

I hope that you won't be completely discouraged, even if you're not up to making a big push. The handy thing about communities is that they can just hang around quietly until someone feels inspired or has the time to devote to boosting them. There's hope!

The monthly public posts I made generally had at least one response (honestly, usually more for the SFW/SFW-welcome ones than the NSFW ones), so it definitely wasn't a total failure! But I can definitely see where you're coming from with the multifandom problem, and I'm pretty sure that my decision to have all non-mod entries default to community-locked wouldn't have helped with that. IDK, maybe if I combine unlocking with vriddy's suggestion of squishing it down to a shorter time frame instead of keeping it year-round, I'll be able to get more traction out of the community? Honestly, I could even make it a pretty close copy of how I've got summerofthe69 set up, since I think that one went pretty well...

Probably not something I'll get around to tonight, though 😂

*offers hugs* I really enjoy(ed?) kittens-and-spitefic, but definitely do not have the bandwidth to manage a comm either.

Thank you for your efforts, and I hope DW does get more traffic as people get antsier about Tumblr.

Edit: oh my gosh that mood theme idea is brilliant. Must.. not.. overload... with projects.

Yeah, the two above have options for making K&S more viable, and I still think that making posts public by default with optional locking (as opposed to locking by default) would also be helpful, if only so the posters could share their posts around, but that may be thoughts for another time.


I'm honestly tempted by Mood Theme in a Year? Like. I could set it up almost entirely from scheduled emails. My only major stumbling block is that the email account I have linked to Dreamwidth only schedules emails out a few months in advance, not year round, but other than that... This is at least partly because I had daydreams about making an adorable pet rat custom mood theme, but didn't get too far into it. But also because I think it'd be a pretty cool community to have! Three tiny drawings a week isn't too many, probably, and most likely pretty easy to catch up on if one falls behind, especially if the mood "prompts" are posted in alphabetical order.

...anyway. I might think more about that.

I am Lurking With Interest. *lurks* I really enjoyed writing for some of the K&S prompts (and also the kitty pics!)

My community on DW kinda..had a meltdown this year. Twice. So I'm not really in a good spot to share or promote it, I think? but if or when there's a resurgence to be had, I can at least post about it on my personal journal. o7

The Mood Theme is so tempting, yeah. I could draw something using my OCs, or cute budgies, or something.

Three tiny drawings a week really isn't that much.

I honestly had a pretty damn good time with K&S, but it was getting to be more work than it felt like it was worth. I definitely want to revive/revitalize it eventually. Gimme a week or two, for Cookie Hell to end, and I might at least make "Posts can be public now" an official thing.


I think I might seriously go through and start sorting some of those moods out, because it sounds like a very fun project. I may have already copied out all of the various moods into their own document... I already mentioned wanting to draw tiny pet rats, but hippos and jellyfish would also be lots of fun, and there's definitely fun to be had with OCs and so forth. Still gonna wait a few weeks to do anything official with it, though 😂 ...January would be the perfect time to start the community, too, now that I think about it...
