The strawberry banana chocolate dilemma
After the events of Miracle Queen, Kagami is walking ...somewhere. Maybe coming home from a visit with Adrien? She's a little despondent because... well, because several things. Adrien does seem to want to be with her, but he's also still hesitating, and that worries her; she's depressed that she blew her chance as Ryuuko again; and, for some reason, seeing Marinette with that blue-haired boy made her stomach upset. She's trying to work her way through these when she happens to see Andre Glacier. She's about to go up and ask for some ice cream (she's thinking blackberry and peppermint for some reason) when she stops; Andre is already talking to someone, and while that normally wouldn't have kept Kagami from getting in line, the person he's talking to is Nathalie (with Gabriel on tablet), and he seems angry about it.
"There, I've done what you wanted! Adrien and Kagami have come back for ice cream together several times, and Marinette with Luka, the pairs never sharing cones with one another. You are responsible for the breaking of more than one heart, but I've done your dirty work. Now give me what you've promised!"
Nathalie turns the tablet slightly so that Gabriel can see Andre better. "Things do seem to be progressing well between Adrien and Kagami, just as you promised," Kagami hears Gabriel say. "Very well. Nathalie, fulfill our part of the bargain." With that, the tablet goes dark.
Nathalie passes Andre an envelope with attempts to be cordial, but he snatches it out of her hand, barely glancing at the contents before dismissing her. "Go. Now! Our business is done. I never want to see you or that man at my stand again, in person or otherwise!" He holds firm until Nathalie leaves, then slumps against his cart.
Kagami waits until the Gorilla has driven Nathalie a fair distance away before she approaches. "Good afternoon, Mr. Glacier."
Andre starts and all but jumps to attention; Kagami notes that a bit of panic remains in his expression. "Ah, young Kagami! Here by yourself today?" Kagami looks meaningfully at the direction Nathalie's car had driven off in, then back at Andre. He deflates. "You heard that, I suppose?"
Kagami does not hesitate, but waiting is not the same as hesitating; when appropriately timed, waiting can goad an opponent into revealing an opening. "I did."
Andre looks away. "I am sorry. Truly, the flavors the three of you share would compliment each other perfectly in a trio, but that man and his assistant...!" He meets her eyes again. "I am in a triad relationship with two wonderful people. We love one another very deeply, but sadly, even in the city of love there is still prejudice. One of my partners, he works in an industry that overlaps with that man's. Somehow, that man found out that we three are one, and obtained photographs—thank god via film and not digital, or I would still be beholden to him!
"That man... He had his assistant make an offer. All I had to do was to was influence his son into choosing a so-called appropriate romantic partner. His other choices for the boy—preposterous! Neither of their flavors would compliment his. Licorice and mint? Coffee and mint? A disaster! And then there was you, the last option that man suggested. I knew Adrien already had a different flavor in mind, but yours would compliment his just as well as hers would, so I waited for the opportunity.
"But then all three of you arrived together! And oh, but your flavors would all have complimented one another beautifully! I was instantly reminded of when I first found my partners—but so also was I reminded of our partner's needs." He looks at his cart, his scoop clenched in his fist. "I thought to influence you and Adrien together, but I could not betray myself, my partners like that; not entirely. I made myself suggest that only two of you should be together, but I could not stop myself from trying to show you how well your flavors worked together regardless. I am both relieved and heartbroken that young Marinette chose to be so selfless, and that there was another whose flavor might compliment hers so easy to find. Still, I feel their flavor combination, as with yours and Adrien's, are not gelling as well as they could, and for that I can only blame myself."
Kagami had been right; Andre had left himself completely open to her, but she could not find it in herself to strike. "Mr. Glacier..." she said at last. "If you would be amenable, I think today I might like to try the flavors that represent your triad. You have given me much to think on."
Andre stared at her a moment, then reached into his ice cream cart to prepare a cone. "Fresh and fruity strawberry, still one of the most popular flavors the world over; sweet and mellow banana, with the brightness of sunshine and the warmth of the beach; and creamy-rich chocolate, awakening energy and love at the same time." With a flourish, he presented the wafer champagne flute to her. "No charge today for the young lady. And if you and those two—or perhaps even those three—should someday come for a cone to share between you, there will be no charge for that, either."
Kagami took the ice cream from him with a carefully practiced smile. "Thank you, Mr. Glacier. I will be sure to remember that."
