I counted out my crocheted hippos a few days ago, and I've got a whopping seventeen of the beasties, so it's high time I moved on to a new critter.

My current plan is for a griffin in macaw colors. The red ones, I think they're called Scarlet*? But it could be Crimson. Anyway, there's a few fiddly bits that'll be a good brain puzzle to figure out, and I'm thinking of tweaking the pattern on the front legs anyway, so I anticipate this being some good fun.

* Edit: Scarlet is correct, but apparently so are red-fronted and red-shouldered, so I think I'm set!

Omg crocheted GRYPHONS? Gryphons/griffins are my FAVORITES.

Yep! You can see some pics over here, if you like (though please ignore any links to buy any of them; they have long since been sold/expired/etc and I just haven't gotten around to removing them 😅).

Ah, the spelling conundrum of gryphon/griffin/etc/help...

That seal-point one is AMAZING! And I love the tiger, too. (Though really all of them are wonderful.)

I think the gryphon spelling was solidified for me at a young age reading Mercedes Lackey's "Mage Wars" trilogy, ha. Though I think griffon is the more traditional spelling.

Urrrgh, I really need to make another seal-point one; and a flame-point one, and a lilac-point one, and... But the colors on the seal-point one just look really fantastic together! redsixwing helped me figure out the coloration of the wings for it, since color-point animals are temperature dependent albino.

See, I also thought "griffon" was right, but then a friend's dad was like, "You mean like the dogs?" and I was like "Huh?", decided I didn't want to deal with it, and switched out one letter. And here I am now 😉


Also, I dug through my crochet tag and found a few more pictures! Gray griffin in chain mail (warning that there are (pet) rat pictures above it, so maybe don't scroll up too far if such animals squick you out); cheetah griffin; and new big griffin (with bonus white griffin "baby"), for which I used my usual griffin pattern and larger eyes/yarn.

The seal point one is probably my favorite, though they're all fantastic!

I also really like the cheetah! And the chainmail is very cute for the grey one. (Also the rats are adorable <3 I miss having pet rats SO much.)

Honestly, I really love how the way its tail curled just so made it look kinda Egyptian!

Pet rats are so great 😭 Tiny adorable critters who crawl on your shoulders and go SNEEF SNEEF SNOOF! right in your ear ♥

Those beasties are outstanding -- the home spun quality of crochet nicely matches the magnificence of the creature.

Thank you ☺ Someone at a show once commented that I picked the exact right direction to crochet the wings in, because it made the rows look more like natural feathers; I don't know if I consciously thought anything when I was designing the pattern beyond "it looks better this way", but it's definitely one of the cooler compliments I've gotten!
