Well, that was some kind of a week!

This year, Molly the dachshund-terrier mix decided/realized that she's afraid of fireworks. I'm reasonably sure that some of them were louder and/or closer this year than they have been in past years, which contributed to things; I ended up letting her stay the night with me on July 4th and 5th, because people were still doing fireworks on Friday, because Friday. There were still more fireworks going on Saturday night, but I had to turn Molly down for that one, since I had already lost a good chunk of sleep to her the previous two nights and had work on Sunday morning.

I ended up nearly having a meltdown at work on Sunday, partly due to not managing to catch up on sleep on Saturday, and partly due to... Well. We change over some menu items quarterly at the hotel, right? And we'd just changed some of the desserts over on June 25th. The last day I'd worked with anyone else present in the bakery was June 24th. I spent July 1st, July 4th, and July 7th on my own in the bakery, with three new desserts on the menu that I hadn't made before. And while my coworkers had been pretty good about getting most of it prepped, so I wouldn't have to do anything myself, I still ended up with two items from the new menu on my prep list: Malted milk ice cream, added to the list by my boss, and banana trifles, added by me after I noticed that the ones that were supposed to be available as backup had actually been mis-shelved and instead should have gone to the "This doesn't look pretty enough to sell anymore, so staff can snack on it" graveyard.

Luckily, the malted milk ice cream was much easier than I had feared; it was basically the same as our vanilla ice cream recipe, but with a pound of malted milk mix added in. I had been worried that the recipe would be much more involved. Even more luckily, one of my coworkers, I'm not sure who, actually left detailed directions about how to set up the various layers of the banana trifle, so I actually managed to put some together without completely melting down.

Monday was my first day of work seeing anyone else in the bakery for two weeks, and I just. I don't like to go more than a week without working alongside at least one of my coworkers, you know? It had been effectively two weeks since I'd seen any of my coworkers when I arrived on Sunday, so I was very relieved to finally touch base with some of them, make sure I hadn't missed any important changes, etc.

I related some of my stress to my boss, and she told me that it was okay to text her on days when I was working alone, and just. This is a good reassurance to have? But it's also a little difficult, because I have had trouble figuring out what I should text any of my coworkers about, versus what I should consult on-site staff about. An example that specifically comes to mind was the time I found a shard of clear plastic (the kind that's near-indistinguishable from glass) in some bread dough I'd been shaping. Clearly a huge deal, right?

My synapses didn't fire quite correctly, though, and I ended up texting my boss (who was not at work at the time) as opposed to a food manager who was on-site. I didn't realize that I should have gone to someone on-site until I was driving home, and though I apologized to my boss for it when I saw her the next day, I only didn't get (however mildly) scolded for it because I cut it off at the pass.

On top of that, one of my coworkers has said frequently that she doesn't like to text our boss when our boss has a day off, and that attitude has started to rub off on me. So between all of those things, even though my boss said I am more than welcome to text her with any questions, it's still a little intimidating to do so.

Anyway, pretty sure a lot of that can be chalked up to the "executive dysfunction" column of ADHD, which doesn't make dealing with it easier, but at least I know the probable reason why.

Today I had a much more relaxing day. I went out and picked up some supplies at Joann's, a couple of items from the grocery store, got deputized to take care of the dog, and then got a nice, long afternoon nap in before dog walk o'clock at 5pm. I'm hoping for even more relaxing tomorrow.

I’m glad that Molly had you to keep her safe during the way-too-loud holiday.
