Aug. 25th, 2005 10:16 pmOkay, it's official. My favorite class is definitely Astronomy. Wanna know why? Well...
Okay, so we were sitting in class and talking about stuff. And the definition of 'planets' versus 'stars' comes up. Planets = an icy or rocky object that orbits around a star and shines only reflected light. I was confused and asked, "What about gas giants?" This lead into an intense discussion on how it's not really gas the way we think of it but more like lots of ice crystals and stuff. And then someone asked how they formed if it was just a bunch of ice crystals and stuff, and the teacher got into this explanation of how gas giants = the cruddy snow that gathers behind tires in the winter. Basically, gas giants are the dirty slush balls of the solar system XD
Then we got around to nebulae. Nebula, according to Sensei, are places were stars are being made. (It might be that I didn't understand or am remembering incorrectly, so bear with me.) They show up red because of all the hydrogen. See, hydrogen apperantly shows up red when it's energized. Or, as Sensei put it, "There's this big star there that's making the hydrogen all excited, so they turn red."
Socchan's thought process: So hydrogen blushes when flashed by stars?
Also, Astronomical Unit is shortened to AU, which distracted me somewhat ^^; (FANFIC ON THE BRAIN, WHUT.)
Anyway, I'm officially obsessed with the sky now. Just so you know. (My God, the language associated with some of this stuff XD)
Got a ride home from Chris (thank goodness). Took out the trash when I got home, and volunteered to take the stuff Hamilton (pet iguana) can't eat of his collard greens and whatnot to the compost out back. While I was walking by our new mini-pond (I don't think my RL friends have seen this yet, actually...) an owl swooped down out of the sky right near me and took up a perch on the telephone wires running horozontal to the house. It was damn cool ^_^ Just felt like sharing that.
Mom's doing well. Grandma Mary has come up from Texas for a visit to help out and stuff ♥ Oh, and I've got about 125 paper cranes finished now. (Idle thought: 1000 cranes = 1000 birds = ......not going there.) I've been working on them when I've got a little extra time before class ^_^ Or after class for that matter. A little extra time when I'm sitting around and not doing anything, anyway. Hope to reach twice as many soon.
