Amigurumi Fanart

So, you may or may not remember me mentioning a secret plan I possibly had back when I made that thar dolphin amigurumi, like, a week ago-ish? Well. I did have a secret plan, and now I am here to show you the results :Db

From jimhines's Jig the Goblin series, I present Smudge the fire-spider:



The two not-flaming images. I wanted to get a few of these, just in case, because as soon as the flames went on they weren't coming off. Notice all eight eyes (which I maybe should've made black, and also placed them differently, but they took long enough that I'm so not re-doing them now) and the pedipalps or possibly fangs in front! Notice the four-legs-per-side! ...Notice how it looks rather more like a mite than a spider, argh =_= It gets better, at least?






FLAMING SPIDER! (Well, he has been spending rather a lot of time with Man-Spider Amazing, The lately...) Featuring standard front and side views, with bonus "attempting to look out the window to maybe see bugs to catch and barbecue" view!

He's still drying, but for my first attempt at making fire out of yarn, I think he turned out reasonably well :3b

Anyhow, Smudge. Yes.

Wow, amazing! The flames really look like flames--how on earth did you do that with yarn?? Awesomeness... and yes, the whole spider-chan looks adorable totally complete and spider-like. Great job!

Thank you ^__^ I took pictures as I worked on the flames so I could make a tutorial later, which I may get to tonight, but the bare bones version is:

1) Attach short strands of yarn to the larger yarn work where you want the flames to be; make sure they're the color you want for the top of the flame (dark orange, in this case).
2) "Fluff"/fray the yarn by brushing it out. I used a brush intended for cat grooming, but a standard brush or fine-toothed comb for human use would probably work just as well.
3) Trim the fluff to give it the right shape and/or length.
4) Apply standard glue like hair gel to the top of the yarn to spike it up a bit.
5) Paint the base of the fluffed-and-spiked yarn with the appropriate color acrylic or fabric paint (yellow, in this case).

And that's all there is to it :3

I just have to say for Smudge 1.0 he's already pretty awesome.
I can't wait to see what Smudge 1.1 looks like :)

You sure got the fire down nicely and I think he looks pretty spider like not mite like. Maybe spreading the spacing on his legs a bit more might help?

Next question it looks like he's knitted. Once you perfect the pattern will you be offering the pattern to fellow fans and knitters?

Still have to say that Smudge is awesome. :D

I'm thinking definitely try and face the two front pairs more forward, and probably shrink the front body segment a bit (or grow the back segment), myself. Definitely at least longer legs, though.

He's crocheted, actually, but I could probably whip up a pattern. I'm not quite sure about a knitted version, since I don't do any of that myself, but he's half accessories anyway, so I guess I could dig around and see what I could find.

I crochet too :) I just knit better because I have been doing that one since I was a kid. Crocheting is something I only learned in the past couple of years.
I couldn't see the pictures as well on my netbook as I can on my regular puter.
Maybe I shall take a shot at knitting a pattern :)
