soc_puppet: Words "Epic Fail" in gray (Epic Fail)

Anyone remember that one time when I suggested I would do regular updates on how I was running the AI Accessibility Department as an example for people to follow, so they'd know what was going on behind the scenes and maybe have a little better idea of how to start their own Accessibility Department? Yeah, that didn't happen.

What happened is this: I got some extra responsibility with the convention. I don't deal very well with extra responsibility, but there was NO ONE ELSE who was stepping up to take the job, people thought I could do it, and the previous job holder assured me that it was easy work. And it pretty much is? I mean, I'm still kinda amused that I'm now in charge of myself, but. The point is, my brain deals with extra responsibility by shunting off something it considers to be of lesser importance (i.e., poorly). In this case, that meant the monthly Running/Making of an Accessibility Department Reports. So, sorry for that. Maybe next year? Or maybe several years in the future, once I feel like I'm well enough on top of my extra responsibilities that I can add something new, sob sob sob. (On the one hand, I don't actually want the extra responsibility! It's stressful and, as mentioned, my brain does badly with it. On the other hand, I have a greater understanding of how the convention works, and greater input in the process. I've already resolved a potential accessibility issue simply by pointing out that we have an Accessibility Department, and the issue would fall under my purview. Power: Informative, helpful, addictive. Responsibility: Stressful, off-putting. Something that everyone else in the universe has probably already learned.)

I've also offered to instate "Productivity Hour", wherein people who have trouble getting stuff done show up to the staff meetings an hour early and we sit down and motivate each other to get stuff done through our shared presence. This... did not work out too well? Stuff happened prior to the last staff meeting that prevented my actual presence for the planned Productivity Hour. One of my co-staffers then invited me to join her and a third staffer at what's effectively the same thing this most recent Saturday afternoon, and I accepted, because productivity! What could go wrong! What went wrong is that she and the other staffer spent a good deal of that time talking, and I didn't actually get as much done as I would have liked :( I forgot, in my years since traditional schooling, my inability to pay attention to more than one set of words at a time, and that spoken words take precedence in my brain.

I did, however, manage to get the Accessibility Policy mailed off to the webmaster, who posted it to the website in under 24 hours, yay! I also got some other stuff done, and while, again, it wasn't as much as I would like, it's more than I would have gotten done otherwise.

My current plan: Go to the public library at least one evening a week to be productive there. I won't have to pay for parking if I go in the evening, and it's guaranteed to be quiet. A change of venue from my house (and, more specifically, my room) will also likely do me a world of good, productivity-wise.

Alternate plan: Invest in sound-blocking headphones and join co-staffers for their weekend productivity thing again.

In related news, in (at least temporary) place of my monthly "This is how I Accessibility Department" reports, I'm kinda thinking of making a "How to put together an Accessibility Department" sort of report/document/how-to. If I do get to that, it will be during my productivity periods. So, best of luck to me!

Whoof - sounds like a big job.

D!!!! I'd love to see but work is blocking all the pictures, so I'll have to look when I'm home.

That's the double-edged sword of group motivated productivity time, and one that my friends and I also have troubles with. It seems to be a general win because if we get together to "get stuff done" and we don't get stuff done because we were talking and hanging out, at least we weren't not getting stuff done by ourselves and getting really down about it (a problem for many people that I know). Anyway, the point I'm getting to here is: headphones are a godsend. At my weekly writing group, or other times when someone has just sent out a missive saying 'hey I'm downtown to do work come hang out', sometimes there is talking and hanging out, and other times there is work getting done, but it's rare that everyone is in either of these places at the same time and it seems to be very valuable for people to be able to withdraw from the group and focus on their own work when they need to. And, you know, once people are around other people doing that, it feels much less awkward/rude to be sitting around with your friends and then put your headphones on and ignore them.
