Potions Class

So I started a new mini-crafting thing, where I brush out bits of yarn and then roll the resulting fluff in glitter and stuff the whole thing in little glass vials. I've been planning a few and giving them fantastical names and am now trying to come up with basic "uses" for them that fit their names. It's an interesting project, especially since I want to be able to condense the descriptions down to what can fit on an average postage tag.
What I have so far:
* Bottled Dream(s) - Three shades of purple yarn (dark, medium, light), with green/blue sparkles. Tiny stars may be used instead, we'll see how that ends up looking. "Uncork for a pleasant daydream, effective up to two hours at a time. Do not operate heavy machinery while consuming."
* Essence of Night - Primarily black yarn with a bit of dark purple and navy blue mixed in, with iridescent white/semi-transparent stars. "Apply one drop to restore a room to night darkness in daylight hours; two drops on especially bright days."
* Distilled Phoenix Flame - Red, orange, and yellow yarn with gold "tinsel" glitter and gold fine glitter. "Effective in purifying objects cursed with up to five degrees of damnation. Do not mix with dragonfire." Dragonfire as a mixing agent is up for debate, and I may or may not add it to my 'to make' list.
* Unicorn Breath - Also possibly unicorn flatus (farts). I may be making extra tags and letting buyers decide which they prefer. Anyway, rainbow colored yarn, in proper order, glitter type and color not decided yet (leaning towards white or silver). "For use refreshing or purifying air in a fifty foot radius. Not effective on [something I need to figure out at some pont]." Wyvern something something maybe?
* Naiad/Mermaid Song/Tears(?) - Hahah yeah, there's a lot that's in the air for this one (so to speak). Definitely shades of blue and green for the yarn, not entirely sure about the glitter. Silver would be nice, and would fit with the aquatic theme well, though I do have some semi-transparent iridescent white hearts that might look good. I'll probably go with Song for the name, actually, if only so I can make the primary use "Getting that @$#^#$% tune out of your head once and for all." (For my own reference: "Uncork for 30 seconds to remove/replace all traces of an unpleasant melody stuck in your head.")
I was showing off Essence of Night and Distilled Phoenix Flame at the AI meeting on Saturday (the only ones I actually have done so far), and a friend of mine there suggested (well, more like insisted) that I should do some Harry Potter themed ones. I agreed, but on the condition that they be at least somewhat disguised in order to cover my ass. I'm only planning on house themed ones so far, and this is what I have so far:
* Serpent's Cunning
* Badger's Temerity?
* Lion's Courage??
* Eagle's ????? Perspective, maybe?
Yeah, Serpent's Cunning is the only one that's definitely settled. I mean, the designs are basically all settled for them, it's just the names and uses that need work. Probably just going to be along the lines of "Used to bolster [stereotypical house traits (not listed in the "potion's" name)] in times of need," or somesuch. I wouldn't turn down suggestions.
For the record, I am planning to seal all the caps down with glue. So my next problems would be display and transportation. Maybe (almost certainly) I can find a place to order little boxes in bulk...
Edit: Oh right, pictures forthcoming eventually.

Date: 2015-09-15 03:32 am (UTC)Temerity is excessive boldness. More suited to Gryffindors than Hufflepuffs. Maybe you're thinking of tenacity?
What size little boxes? Because depending on the answer to that, you might want to try a jewelry supply place. Fire Mountain Gems, maybe.

Date: 2015-09-15 03:43 am (UTC)Ah yes, that does sound more likely. Really, I should just get a thesaurus out and start looking up related words.
Jewelry size is definitely in the right size category. My current bottle supply is largely two sizes, and the larger of the two is around four inches tall at most, so. Anyway, thanks for the tip! I'll check them out.

Date: 2015-09-15 03:00 pm (UTC)Hm. Wyvern's Tears is sort of a Monster Hunter thing... Wyvern's Poison/Toxin/Venom?

Date: 2015-09-16 02:11 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure I heard once that Ravenclaw is actually an eagle, despite having raven in its name. Kinda like how Griffindor isn't a griffin. I'll double-check at some point.
I'm liking Wyvern Toxin of those options. Brushed out yarn tends to look more puffy/ethereal than liquid, and I feel like clouds of toxin could be a thing that mythical creatures spew.

Date: 2015-09-16 02:14 pm (UTC)..I still think a raven one would be cool, if for no other reason than black an' sparkly. xD
Clouds of toxin could definitely be a thing! I've read stories of wyverns poisoning wells and rivers and such. *nodnod*
Suggestions? I have suggestions!
Date: 2015-09-16 12:41 am (UTC)I like the idea of "Mermaid's Song", especially if you use the heart glitter. You could do a separate "Naiad's Tears" - less green and more blue, since Naiads were freshwater nymphs, and designed for 'healing a broken heart' or 'reviving you when tired with nature's beauty'?
What about "Powdered Dragonscale" or "Distilled Dragonscale"? A deep forest green, for the base colour, perhaps, with a hint of black (smoke) and iridescence (treasure) or red glitter (fire)?
Oooh, and I'd love to see a "Pegasus Mane" (Pegasus Fluff?) one, too; mostly white/cream yarn, with perhaps a couple tiny white feathers? For lifting the spirit and giving new perspective on obstacles! Or for uncommon companionship during a trying time? (Since Pegasus was the companion of Bellerophon and helped him slay the Chimaera.)
For the Potteresque ones: How about "Eagle's Perception" or "Eagle's Vigilance" or "Eagle's Clarity"? It could be used to enhance one's focus and increase insight when facing challenges.
Yay, suggestions! \o/
Date: 2015-09-16 02:24 am (UTC)Splitting Naiad and Mermaid 'potions' into different options is definitely a winning idea. I wonder if I can find chunky glitter that looks like little musical notes, or if I'll have to resort to sequins.
Powdered Dragonscale is great! I'm trying to avoid repeating any words in the names just yet, though that may be difficult if I really get going on these ^^a
Hmm; I'll have to see what I can find for feathers, but that's definitely an option! Oh, Pegasus Down, maybe? (I wanted to avoid Phoenix Down because Final Fantasy copyright stuff, but it really is a similar visual texture.)
Perception! That's the word I was looking for! I'm now split between it and Vigilance. Perception would lend clarity in difficult situations, but vigilance would be a great study booster. Hmm...
Naturally I would have a disclaimer somewhere about ethical ingredient collection and how all of my materials are surrendered voluntarily by the various species involved. Which makes perfect sense for Pegasus Down and Powdered Dragonscale, since they gotta molt sometime, but raises interesting questions re: Unicorn Flatus, among others, LOL.
