Avery was holding up a measurement crystal, squinting against the sun to get a reading of the offshore signal, when something bumped the side of his boat. "Yarr," a familiar voice said. "Surrender, ye scurvy dog, and prepare to hand over yer booty!"
Avery rolled his eyes affectionately and lowered the crystal. Turning, he addressed his mershark boyfriend: "You're the one making deliveries for major trading companies; shouldn't I be the one boarding you?"
Zeek pouted impressively under his makeshift seaweed eyepatch. "Look, are you going to let me steal a kiss, or not?"
Laughing, Avery leaned over and surrendered.
