I am wiped right now, but I did want to post about this before I slept! And then possibly actually get around to the actual e-mailing part, but first things first.

I never expected this to happen in a million years - or at least not without me going out of my way to advertise a considerable amount, and/or getting a DeviantArt account (I'm still resisting). Despite my distinct lack of expectations, however, I may soon be following at least a portion of my dream and drawing pictures for money.

See, I usually like to get to work about an hour early in the afternoons. Just have a little time to prepare for the day, wind down, whatever. And also to do somewhat productive things that I wouldn't necessarily get to at home, distractions like television and the Internet being what they are. Among these "productive" pursuits is drawing, occasionally comics. (For example, I churned out a yuri-riffic sci-fi/fantasy themed take on The Little Mermaid in about seventeen pages over the course of a couple of months of said hours - ADHD and such interfering, of course ;P) So, on Friday, it was while I was in the midst of drawing some sea-shells and cephalopods that I was interrupted.

Guy (whose name I fail at knowing just now and so we will call "Guy"): Hey, could I talk to you for a minute?
Me: *sensing no foul play* ...Sure!
Guy: Great!
Oy: *as I'm packing up* What're you in trouble for now?
Me: =_= I'm not in trouble every time some random person wants to talk to me! Sheesh!
Oy: D:
Me: *goes over to talk to Guy* So, what's up?
Guy: So, I've seen you drawing a lot around here. And I'm working on a video game and was wondering if you'd like to contribute art to it at all. For money, of course.
Me: *double-take* Aaldskjfsld!! O_O Sure!
Guy: The company I co-own is just getting started, and this would be our first game, so we wouldn't be able to pay you much - just eight bucks a pic or so.
Me: Yeah, I get how that goes. That would be fine.
Guy: And you'd get credit in the booklet or whatever and everything. Anyhow, think you could e-mail some work to this address? *hands me card, paper with patchwork of computer-colored art on* This is sort of what we're looking for, by the way.
Me: *looking over paper* Yeah, I think I could do that. I mean, I'm not perfect, and my style is definitely anime-ish, but I can tweak if necessary.
Guy: Great! I/we look forward to hearing from you :Db
*Socchan and Guy go their separate ways, Socchan still slightly dazed*

I gave it some good thought over the weekend, and I think I'm pretty cool with it, over all. I mean, it's not something I expected, so it's also something I hadn't planned on depending on financially - maybe even ever. I did initially get into bus driving with a mind towards using my free time to work on and promote my art/writing, and using the driving to pay the bills. I feel like I'm in a reasonably good place where I can say 'no', or even just offer constructive criticism without terminating my career entirely (though this is partly because they are just getting started). And with the question of "can I turn it down" out of the way, I feel pretty positive about going through with it and seeing how far I'll get. There may come a point where I feel my ethics would be compromised by the art, or possibly that my style just didn't mesh well enough with their designs (the sample work is generally more "gritty" than my stuff tends to be), but hey. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this definitely looks like it could be a start for me. And I'd be a girl working in video games, too! Elite group! Genre influence! Woo! \o/

After another question or two with the guy today, I think it's going to be artbook/instruction book type stuff, but I'm not 100% sure yet. I guess I'll find out more when I send the e-mail.

And um. Yeah. I-I have a paying art job now potentially o_O

Edit: May 8th: Finally sent out my sample art. (Damn you, computer issues!) Guess I'll have to see what happens, now.
