In other news, I have finally found a recipe that will help me use up those hickory nuts from... way back when. Okay, so technically it's just a cheese cake recipe and I added hickory nuts for the sake of using them up, but it's close enough, darnit! Sadly, I could only use one cup of hickory nuts in good consience, which means there are about two (two and a half?) left. Still, that's one cup down! In celebration, I will tell you a story from my childhood. Yes, I know I've only barely graduated from high school; this was over six years ago, so I'm counting it as 'childhood' in relation to 'now'.
Now, when I was in grade school and living in a different house, I decided to embark upon my first big solo baking project: I would make a chocolate chip cheese cake. Having decided this, gotten a recipe book, gotten the ingredients, et cetera, I started to make the cake. Unsupervised. On my own.
It came out of the oven looking beautiful. I made the whole thing by hand too, since I couldn't find the electric mixer +_+ Everyone agreed it was gorgeous. We passed out pieces to all of the relatives ^_^ and I was so proud of my accomplishment!
Then, we helped ourselves <3 And it was good. Mostly. Except for this strange aftertaste it had... It was so odd, Dad had to finish the thing himself ^^;
When I next decided to make cheese cake (same recipe) Mom offered to help. This was very kind of her, and I reluctantly accepted (I thought I had done fine on the first one, strange aftertaste aside). As we worked and got out the ingredients, Mom came upon something that wasn't quite right.
Instead of sour cream, I had gotten out... sour cream and onion chip dip.
o.O I was so embarrassed! I hadn't been able to find the sour cream the first time, and that tub did say 'sour cream' on it, so I had just used that instead ^.^;;; (Later, I heard from my aunt that she had identified the taste as 'onion', but had no idea why I would put onions in a cheese cake. Well, there's the reason.)
To this day, this story is told in my household, and is mentioned at least five times every time I even think about making another cheese cake.
Anyway, this one turned out rather well, I think, and is cooling in the 'fridge as I type ^__^ I hope it will taste okay.
