Snakes are a traditional symbol of immortality. This is because, each time a snake sheds its skin, it appears to be re-born, as if in a new body.
So, a snake becomes immortal by shucking its old body in return for a new one... Sound familiar to anyone? Maybe a link will help. (Though, God, the 'virgin sacrifice' part sounds really bad when put into different context...)
