soc_puppet: Dreamsheep as Lumpy Space Princess from Adventure Time (Default)
Recently (recently being two months ago, give or take) I went on a trip to Europe with my high school orchestra. It basically consisted of: travel for a day, stop for a day, and while we're stopped, let's give a concert!, travel for a day.
The Europe Trip was one of the reasons I'd chosen to stay in orchestra as long as I had. Selfish, I'm aware, but what can I say? Europe is Europe.
Europe FAQ:
Where did you go: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and we stopped in France for about two hours.
What was the most similar: The people.
What was the most different: Not being able to read the signs/billboards/etc >_<. My culture shock.
What do you miss the most about Europe: The trees.
What was your favorite thing about Europe: The comics.
I kid you not. Different manga has been translated into German than into English thus far.
I am terribly addicted to Detective Conan, and have been for about a year now. I knew it had been translated into other European languages (Spanish, for example) and figured at least a fifty percent chance that I could find some on the trip. If not, there was bound to be a few other series I might like.
As someone who is used to paying about $10.00 U.S. for every volume of manga, the price of five Euros (roughly $6.25 U.S. on my trip) was a welcome change. Okay, so I don't know German. I don't care. I get manga I wouldn't see for years in the U.S. at nearly half the cost. (I have since learned what I can only call Fangirl German, mostly by looking at the pictures, being familiar with the storyline, and making some very good guesses -_-.) The pictures can mostly tell the story themselves, anyway.
My Battle Cry in Europe: Bucher (possibly with umlauts (those two little dot things) over the 'u', but I don't remember.)
Found Detective Conan (there Detektiv Conan) at the first bookstore I stopped at. Bought books one through ten. Rejoiced. Still wanted the rest. Eventually managed to get 18, 19 and 23-27. Still _want_ all the ones I don't have, don't care which language.
Random thought on Volume 6, page 69, last panel: No one in his right mind should look _that_ happy while holding a box cutter in front of his face.
