At least I'm on the list...
Nov. 1st, 2004 08:53 pmThis afternoon I got a call from a volunteer at the state Democratic party. She'd gotten a list of people who were recently registered to vote and I was on it.
It was a great disappointment for me to explain to her that I am still Too Young to Legally Vote.
We get to register when we turn seventeen and a half, see? And I figured it was my civic duty to do so. (Plus, I've still got romantic notions about Jury Duty ^^;...) And, well, my State and Local Government teacher just happened to have some registration forms lying around for just such an occasion (that someone would want to register) and went to the trouble of bringing it in for me once I'd filled it out, so, you know... I couldn't resist.
Now, my name is technically on the list of registered voters. But I'm still technically too young to vote. (By twenty-eight days. It's not fair! T-T)
I guess I just find it sort-of ironic. See, eighteen to twenty-four is the age bracket least likely to vote. Most people are trying to _increase_ the percentage of people in that age bracket who vote. I'm just a fraction of a month too young, and I'm not allowed to. So if I go and vote, I'll be disobeying the letter of the law, but living out the spirit. And if I was found out, I'd probably end up with my voting rights taken away. I really don't want that. I may not be able to decide who leads the country for the next four years, but I sure as hell want to decide who leads it after!
Look... If you can vote tomorrow, go do it, okay? I know you may not think you can make a difference, but, well... Just give it some thought, okay?
I think that's all I've got for now. God speed to those of you who visit the polls.
