Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
Jun. 17th, 2009 12:43 pmEvery time I think about this (see also previous post), tears start to well up. It's a horrible situation.
And I'm a horribly selfish person. There are things I can do to help, I'm certain, but I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the information involved here. I'm balancing my energy between monitoring shit that's going on over here and trying to remain emotionally healthy. Practically the first thing my first aid teacher told the class was not to feel other peoples' pain for them when you're working to help them, but it's going to take a few hours before I feel like I can effectively suspend my reactions. And in the mean time, shit keeps happening over here that I feel I can deal with better.

I don't want to be selfish, but pragmatism (and air plane sudden-pressure-loss rules) states that it's important to take care of yourself before you take care of anyone else.
And I really, really don't want to not extend help to the people who need it, or to withdraw what's already being used.
Just. A little bit more in the area of Hope and Change wouldn't be too much to ask, would it? Some of that fierce advocacy (and a little less comparing GLBTQIA folks to pedophiles while defending DOMA) wouldn't be out of place, either, I think, and not just from other people.

* Epic news: THEY'RE MAKING A NEW MONKEY ISLAND SERIES! And also re-releasing the first game with vocal options and stuff and eeeeeeee ♥♥♥♥♥ Must make room on the computer, save up money...
* I find I am quite fond of my "generic" text-and-color icons on DW. They're pretty and practical, even if they're not entirely perfect. I'm slowly continuing to think of new ones I want to add, so it's just as well I've got a paid account now.
* SPEAKING OF DREAMWIDTH. I just got three new invite codes last night! I'm guessing it had something to do with me using up my previous two, but whatever. The point is! Anyone out there want one? They do me no good sitting in my inbox like this. Edit: Down to two, but still willing and happy to share :3b
* We've got an author visiting and doing talks about writing and stuff :D Anyone out there familiar with Jack Gantos? Among other things, he's written the Rotten Ralph and Joey Pigza series. He's quite entertaining, and at the workshop I went to tonight (aimed at adults, about how to turn a journal into a book) he had some very interesting processes that I only wish I'd thought of any of the times I tried to start a diary IRL when I was wee. Anyhow, we now have a rubber chicken signed by him :D (To compound his awesome, he tends to sign very elaborately, with drawings; he told stories about decapitating chickens during his talk, so he drew a chopped-off chicken head on the rubber chicken ♥ I may have to go back for more talks tomorrow.)
* I'd re-post the whole thing, but I'm not entirely sure about how I'd feel being the vector of a meme on DW. So I'll just say:
Y'all make my world a better place.
