Worst-case scenario would've been one of those transfer student fics with gratuitous shipping because the author just wanted an excuse to stick those two groups of characters in the same room at the same time. I didn't think it was exactly likely--I'm pretty sure you're more professional than that, and even then you probably could've done it some sort of justice--but I did (briefly) consider the possibility.
Slightly higher up the ladder than that would be "Oh, Hakuba's actually a wizard, 'cuz he's from England!" Which would be ...interesting, but doesn't account for all the time he's spent in Japan that would overlap his studies. Which of course can be wiped away by the handy Time Turner plot device but still sits wrong with me.
About the best case scenario that I could come up with would be Hakuba = wizard from above, only an early graduate. He would be investigating odd magic-like events and occurences in Japan for some reason.
