Meme thing
May. 15th, 2006 02:49 am...I am not actually awake. Really. The time listed here is just your imagination. *actually couldn't sleep, despite warm milk, stfu*
Yeah, so, got tagged twice for this LJ Name Meme thing (once by
nekokenchan and once by
lyzzle), so I figured I'd better get around to it ^^a Most procrastination on it was due to me not quite knowing how to explain it, but I'm up anyway now, so I figured I may as well.
Explain your LiveJournal name and its meaning. When you're done, tag as many people as there are letters in your name.
Originally came up with it about ninth grade. I was a bit of a philosophy geek at the time, though more philosophy geek lite than philosophy geek heavy, and majorly fond of Socrates. He was something of a hero to me, and still is, though I've forgotten most of what I've read in Sophie's World/learned in class/what-have-you. Still new to Japanese culture and honorifics at the time, I latched onto 'socrates-chan' for a philosophic personality in the femenine form. 'socchan' was what I percieved to be the least formal way to address myself; I admit some Ranma 1/2 influence in that respect. Unfortunately for me, I didn't understand that while it was informal, it was also very familiar ^^a It probably can fall into the realm of "cute nicknames high-school girls give themselves." I had mostly meant it to be humble-ish.
Eventually registered on FF.net with it. Decided around that time that I didn't want to be one of those authors who went around changing her screenname every time she got a new obsession, and so stuck with it. (Socchan is, for the record, my second name variation.) Went with 'socrates-chan' for e-mail and the like whenever I could, but decided on the shorter version for LJ probably to match the FF.net account--though I'd also been using it as an anon handle for a while when I was still only lurking in LJ-land.
It was originally meant to be uncapitalized, but then I decided I didn't care and now it's either way. Gadfly Productions is also a reference to Socrates--he refered to himself as a gadfly, whose purpose was to bite the lazy horse of Athens into wakefulness/awareness. I figured it would be good for off-beat fanfiction and the like. The three icons are (hopefully) a gadfly, hemlock (the plant that killed Socrates), and an altered form of a business card I had to make for Computer Design/art/whatever back in high school. The card features a bunny in honor of the Plot Bunny of infamy. The original had a brief description of me as a fanartist/author (only somewhat less humble). Someday I will make an animated icon with that excerpt from Plato's Apology. ...Still debating on whether I'll actually make it my new default icon or not. This Sluggy one has worked mighty well for the time I've had it.
Anyway! These days I mostly go by socchan or Socchan, though on one memorable occasion I was called Soc and would probably be tickled pink if it were to happen again ;)
And uh, tagging, right. Seven people, hrm. ...I have mixed-ish feelings about tagging people that I may get into someday. But not just now. Anyway, ignore the tag if you like. Whatever.
Mostly cheating here by tagging x number of RL friends that may or may not be reading actively :D; (Guessing 'not' for two of three. Feel free to correct me.)
lightningceder,
tiralmo,
think_tomorrow. A few other people on the 'flist:
sora_ko (been sorta wondering),
zanile5 (tagging you for something now ^_~),
yutaya (hadn't really wondered before, but now I am), and
phantom_kaito (just wanted to hear more from you, really).
Go for it if you like, not if you don't, and I guess I'll maybe see a few on the 'flist in a while. Or maybe not.
