Snow, books, and... job?
Jan. 17th, 2007 08:40 pmYeah, so, two days without updating when I technically could have. Uh. I don't know what to say?
Well, first off, there's snow. A good couple inches. Not enought to cancel school, of course, but it's there, and that's the important part. And I'm happy about it! Not because the snow melt means we'll have more water for farms and stuff come spring (though it does), not because it looks damn pretty out there (though it does), not because I have fun driving in it for some reason (though I do), and certainly not because my brother and I have to shovel it (though we do appreciate the fact that we had so little to shovel). No, I'm happy for the snow because it is winter, and we damn well should have snow out there! It's cold, it's miserable, it's the middle of January, we need our snow to go with it! I'm accustomed to snow in the winter, and now that it's here, I can feel better, and stop worrying so much that it's saving all of the stuff up for July or something.
Secondly, I, uh, have a job. Well, not at this very moment, but my cousin-in-law talked to the guy who runs The Pit (a barbeque place downtown - good stuff), and apparently all I need to do is go in sometime and talk to him to work out hours and stuff. I'm planning to go with Christine (my Life Counselor) tomorrow; she will be there to make sure I don't chicken out and not actually go. And possibly to make me call Jennifer ahead of time to ask questions I couldn't think of when she innitially broke the news to me.Or maybe just to confirm the name of the guy I'm supposed to talk to ^^a I think it might be Jeff?
Finished reading Wedding Peach on my holidays. Or rather, finished reading the first six volumes, which seems to constitute the entire storyline. Volume seven seems to be an extremely fast-paced retelling of the entire story.
Overall opinion of the manga (as compared to Sailor Moon, as most people seem to think WP is a rip off of it (my opinion: I'd say it's probably just a Me, Too! at best)):
While I liked the magic powers and what-have-you better in Sailor Moon, I think I found the characters, and especially the relationships, in Wedding Peach to be more endearing (with the possible exception of the last Love Angel and her guy; I liked her fine, but the relationship seemed a little ...unneccessary, especially with it happening after the main plot had concluded). Or at least the main character and her love interest. I'm sorry, but Usagi and Mamoru did get a little two dimensional for me after a while, especially if we're not going by the live-action version. Plot-wise, I don't think either of them was particularly stronger than the other; both had their pitfalls and moments of brilliance.
Anyway, an enjoyable read, though, like many shoujo and magical girl stories, not one that I expect to get a lot out of.
I also finished reading A Brother's Price today. Thanks so much for the rec,
daemonitellama! You had me at "Gender-bent Cinderella story" (I'm a sucker for gender twisting and especially for new takes on fairy tales), but it turned out to be a lot more than I expected. The politics, for one thing, and the social structure fascinated me. It's set up in a way that I could picture actually happening, given the circumstances. While some of the twists and turns were a little predictable (I guessed who Halley was right off the bat, for example), I was still entertained. (The regicide thing, on the other hand, caught me completely off-guard. There I was, minding my own business, reading about multiple wives and squeeing over the little happy bits, and then bam! Regicide plots hit me right out of left field.)
Also, Cullen owns my soul. I realized this about the time he fell out of the curtains. I had been thinking for some time that at least one of the characters needed to show up at CFUD (I was thinking Jerin at the time, though also contemplating the ages of various sisters), mostly because of the reaction to all the gay in camp. Throughout the book, I was fairly certain lesbianism would be easily rationalized by that society (and later had this more or less confirmed by one of the characters, though it seemed to be leaning more towards bisexuality/girls-fooling-around-on-the-side than real lesbianism), and that gay men would be a lot harder to deal with. In fact, I don't think that they would be really dealt with at all, unless it was a husband who was allowed to see a male lover on the side occasionally, or maybe just after he had supplied a number of children to his wives. At camp, not only are there more males present than females, but - well, it's as they say, "there must be something in the water." Considering the number, it would probably make at least a small amount of sense to Jerin at least that many of the men would have turned to loving one another. ...He would also be deeply confused by the lack of polygamy, and would almost certainly condone the director's actions if he knew it was because her fiancé was killed. Or at least see them as more acceptable than a large percentage of the camp. Though he might be more confused by it if he contemplated the male-to-female ratio sooner. And I'm not even going to contemplate any potential reactions to Wreaththu, because wow. Just... wow. That's potentially huge.
...Where was I? Oh yeah, Cullen. Adorable kid. Completely adorable. Need him in camp. And there's no way I could write it, as I am teh suck at coming up with app ideas, so. Someone else, plz.
Anyway. That's what I've been doing recently. And also finishing up one of the two pictures I plan to shove at Chisame (at CFUD) come Febuary 2nd (her birthday). And then working on a different picture that I kinda vaguely owe Tsuzuki IC-ly, as I said I would, and now feel somewhat guilty since I hadn't finished it. (Speaking of finishing things, I've got a bunch of kisses that I really need to scan.)
And that's about it, really. Except for the fact that it's about 15 degrees colder in my room than it is upstairs, thus making my ratties hide in cloth scraps most of the day :(

Date: 2007-01-18 03:02 pm (UTC)I feel the same way about snow up here. I don't like to shovel, but not having snow in January makes me anxious. Minnesota should be snowy this time of year.
