...De-thinking-better-of-it, why can't I just make up my mind. Sadly, text already lost, so uh. AHEM. Fanbrats/new fans/n00bs/etc vs. longtime fans/older fans/just-new-to-the-series fans/etc. What distinguishes one from the other? Habits, opinions, etc. Plz to keep low on wank and to not mention names when you know/think the individual involved is not mature enough to handle it.

Edit: Half an hour before it closes is an okay time to check with the library reference desk about where to send complaints/requests/concrit re: action figures of the Nickelodeon TV show type, isn't it?

I tend to associate the word "fanbrat" with people self-centred, with prejudicied views against a character/pairing, thinking that their taste is the "good" and every different taste are the "evil"(the kind of jerk who will flame a story because it's about the wrong pairing/put the wrong character on top/et caetera...).

So, I don't necessary associate fan brat with people who are new in a fandom.
Sure, sometimes new members act like fanbrat but some older fan are not much better.

Of course, in case of character/pairing bashing, a newbie could ignore some character development because he don't have read/seen the entire manga/book/anime yet or don't have read yet good fanfiction about a pairing(Hey, I would have never taken seriously Envy/Ed without the fic which had convinced me it could be done IC).
In this case, it's more a matter of ignorance that imaturity, and some newbie came in the fandom with more knowledge of the manga than some older fan so...

Some would said it's a question of age but I'm not trully convinced, I've seen teenagers(or even ten years old child) beeing more mature and open minded than people who are old enough to be my father.

(ponders)

In fact, newbie could be a piece of fresh air in fandom, they bring with them new idea, new way of seeing a character, and besides all, new enthousiasm.
On the other hand, old fan could remain trapped in their ideas about a character/how a pairing should be handdled/etc...The kind of thing which could made die a fandom slowly because every fic is a retelling of the same cliché and because no one(or very few people) dare to try something which are different from what have been done before.
But maybe it's just me since I found my favorite fandom(DC/MK) pretty conservative.^__^;

But we could argue that older fan have taken more time to think about the characters, and if some of them are not open minded to new way of seeing a character, some other could be tired to see a character pictured always in the same way/always the same kind of plot used, and trying new characterisation/plot.

I'm not an elitist looking the newbies like rabid and stupid ignorants who will ruin my fandom, on the contrary it's always a pleasure to see new fans because I always seen them like a potential for good and unusual fics.

And besides all, every older fan was a newbie, every newbie would become an older fan later, so if you're a newbie, be gentle with the old timer, otherwise you would be the next to be bullied.XD

tl;dr - disorganized fan thoughts.

Probably a lot of stating the obvious. -_-;

New comers:
- People who may or may not have just discovered the series, but are new to the fandom associated with it.
Depending on their experience with prior fandoms and netiquette in general, they may or may not be ignorant of stances on fanart/fic theft, speach conventions, different versions of the series and extended canon-info, fan theory, fan activity, series background(aka author or related series), and so on...

- In the noob/fanbrat category I'd put those that really have no clue and keep digging. :cB
They can come to reason with time, attention and patience, but sometimes they just want drama. Critical distance oft absent.

- Some newcomers feel more like visitors to me, as they play a bit with the fandom and then pass on to something else. Does that mean they become old timers? I dunno. Depends how involved they become.
- Some fans stay a long time in a fandom doing nothing more than discussing things and sharing ideas/images/impressions. Others get involved (be it by merely reading/watching/looking or making/using) in some aspect of fanwork such as Fansub, Scanlations, RPG, Fanfic, Fanart, Graphics, Data collecting, News posting, AMVs, etc... One doesn't prevent another, one doesn't need to be limited to one.
I guess a long time fan of one medium might be considered (and consider themselves) a noob in another.

- I personally think new fans are more likely to notice something new in the fandom landscape via google and other search engines than older fans. And I think we've all google imaged searched at one point?
They are also more likely to want to create their own site/blog/version of something on the series I guess, thanks to fresh enthusiasm.

Long timers:
- Fans that have been around the fandom for a long time.
*idly checks something* ... I've been active in DC fandom for 6 years. Wah!
- Long timers often have a bigger knowledge of the series in general and the Fandom activities they are involved in, but they can also be as prone to forgetting things/confusing fanon and canon as anyone else. I presume they are usually more aware of the Fans in the Fandom, who's who. E.g.: I presume an long timer would be more likely to recognize a fanart as not canon or a fic as x author's, or to be aware of what ideas have been done before or not.
- I assume people who've been around a long while in fandom tend to hang around the same cliques, then again, maybe I'm just assuming things out of nowhere.
- To be honest I guess it's not so much the "long time" factor that is important but the "time involved" factor.

Old Timers:
- Fans that have moved on but still have fun memories of the Fandom? 8D
- Some people manage to be active in more than one fandom at a time, others don't. Some yoyo.

On Change:
- As Claude said, new fans are not a bad thing. That said, from what I've observed in the French DC/MK fandom, I get the impression that if there's not that many fans already involved in one aspect of Fandom, new fans might not even consider it unless they import the concept from some other fandom themselves. New/unsure fans look up to older/more-experienced fans, to fans with more influence, I guess?
Then again, maybe the french fans were just turning to the english fandom for their fandom fix whenever there was a lack in the french one.
- Fans leaving happens too, and I think an exodus of old fans changes the fandom as much as an arrival of new fans does.

On Generation Gap:
- some adapt, some don't I guess. Older fans tend to find young ones annoying, young fans sometimes consider the old ones 'bullies' depending on temperaments. Age differences aren't so easy to notice on the net, so most go by speech patterns/assumptions. Peeps new to the internet (and/or fandom?) may not be so aware of this.
- Old fans need not to forget that they aren't perfect either. :c/
