I just use it as a bonus, progress while doing things that aren't pokemon to be reaped when I do play pokemon.
Considering I was playing Diamond this year still, three years later... I won't worry about getting everything unlocked fast. The only course I've bled dry of everything I want is the first one anyway- and even then I could probably go back for a Nidoran if I don't find one. But I did get a Kanghaskhan before my second badge >D
