Well, I did get back three days ago...
Nov. 28th, 2007 09:00 pmI think it's about time for a vacation summary post, don't you?
We left for Texas at Far Too Early O'Clock on the morning of Saturday the 17th. We arrived in Sherman at Somewhat Late-ish At Night (But Not That Late For A CFUD-er) O'Clock and basically dropped into respective beds.
Sunday involved the four of us being dragged to church (well, they were mostly dragging me; everyone else was pretty voluntary) where everyone was an eensy bit too friendly for my tastes. Not in a bad way, just not in a way I'm used to. It was that whole "close knit community" vibe.
We followed up church with a trip to a secondhand bookstore, where I tracked down not only a copy of The Door Into Fire, but also a copy of The Door Into Shadow, both from an as yet unfinished (to the best of my knowledge) quartet by one of my favorite authors. Managed to rip through the former over time on the vacation, and found out it was everything I never thought I wanted out of a book and then some. It is on my "to reread eventually" list, though I have yet to get very far in the book that follows it.
Monday involved, uh. Wait, I know this, I know I do. Oh yeah! We went to this small town looking for antique stores for Dad to browse through. Which we found. Also, three bookstores, which were all closed. And an awesome café with very tasty food. Raspberry turkey sandwich = A++.
Tuesday we got up early-ish and headed out on the road early-ish. And then I hung out with Mati for a long, long time ♥ It was great fun :Db I bought her a copy of Okage, because it does not have enough fans and it was only five bucks, and she bought me a copy of Swordspoint (which is next on my reading list, I swear) and the Magic Knight Rayearth three-volumes-in-one TP reprint thing (which was on sale for ten bucks - less than one third the price the same material originally cost). I have... mixed feelings on the "re-translation" that they did. They were inconsistent D: And removed one of my favorite lines (that one where they're at the fountain of Eterna where Umi's like, "What's that line," and Fuu looks at it and then looks at Umi and is all Vana White and says, "It's a line." And then there's this line of text right next to her that says "Clearly a line". And I cracked up over it originally and really miss it now that it's not there). And still haven't translated Caldina's name as Caldina instead of Gardina. WTF. Perhaps I am just too picky.
Anyway, that day turned out to be MKR day for me, because we also found the entire anime on sale at a Halfprice Books for only $30.00. On DVD. Which is what a single DVD of the series cost me long ago. Needless to say, I splurged.
After that was hangage at Mati's house, where I met a couple of the cats and managed to catch a glimpse of a few more. We watched two episodes of Twelfth Kingdom, and then got to playing video games - with extra bonus commentary 8D There was also eating of food. At 10:00, Mati drove me to Grandma's house, where I slept.
Wednesday, Dad and Grandma headed off with Grandma's dog Rusty in her car, while Mom, Tom and I took the van to see Dinosaur State Park. It had finally started to get chilly, and the park itself was less exciting than I thought it would be - though the scenery was pretty. It was also less than Mom remembered it to be; when she went, some thirty years ago, not only were the dinosaur footprints clearer, but people were actually allowed to stand in them. I remember wondering if these things weren't actually related, and hoping that some scientists thought to take plaster casts of the footprints so they could make replicas down the road.
After taking a picture of the Creation evidence museum we saw on the way in, the three of us continued our journey to Houston. We were within an hour's drive of our destination when the van broke down. I wandered over to a Barnes and Nobles across the street while Mom waited for AAA to send a pickup truck. I managed to catch a glimpse of Little Evils (Sluggy Freelance megatome 02) on the shelves there, but was low on cash myself and did not actually have time to persuade a family member to pick up a copy for me for birthday/Christmas, as the pickup truck arrived earlier than expected.
Later we learned that some wiring in the car had ...I wanna say melted, causing the fan, the radiator and the AC to cop out. It was expensive repairs :/
...Leaving it at Wednesday for the moment, Stork and Finn just introposted and I so want in on that action.
Also, I would like to say I plan to app someone in January. Sadly, Timmy and possibly Lyzz, it is not who you want me to app.
