Love for everyone!
Dec. 1st, 2007 04:12 pm*risks the sloppy icy slushy roads to get to the library and check her e-mail, where she finds - GASP! eleven happy birthday messages!* Okay yeah, that was worth it. I promise I'll get to showering love on the lot of you in a minute, I just want to post my thoughts on the Avatar episodes first.
* First and foremost! That shippy moment shortly after the first commercial break? Best birthday present ever.
* That said, these two episodes also make Zutara at least 98% more plausible for me - mostly because of Zuko's decisions and character development, but especially because it seems likely that they'll be spending a good amount of time together where they'll have to at least try to get along.
I could probably essay about why I didn't really see this ship as being plausible before now, but I don't know what anyone else would get out of it. Likewise, I'm not going to be "jumping ships" as it were for probably quite a while, if ever, but I am still glad that Zutara got thrown a bone - especially with how unlikely the pairing seemed after the season two finale.Blah blah blah, peace love and hope, blah blah.
Long story short, I still ship what I ship, I'm glad other people can ship what they ship with better canon compliance, and anyone who doesn't like it can go suck on an egg.
* That aside, the shipper in me is worried about that look Katara got right after the shippy moment. She's got some issues to work through before I feel the ship is stable and secure. My money says it'll be an issue in the next few episodes, and may even remain unresolved until the end of the series.
Other stuff!
* First news of Suki in a long time. Is she still alive? One can hope, but we'll still have to wait.
* I'm also kinda sad that Sokka-tachi didn't raid the prisons. I guess I'll just have to hope that they'll either get to it later, or that Iroh managed to smuggle a few extra prisoners out with him. Or both. Both would be good. Needs moar Southern Water Tribe benders!
* Eeeeee, so that's where the Williams sister cameo was ♥ WIN. Also, White Jade Tea ♥ Who else remembers that one poison plant Uncle thought was White Jade? Yeah ♥♥♥ Uncle finally gets his tea.
* Hot damn, the swampbenders are back! :Db And they've brought chicks! ...Okay, I realize I'm probably the only one in the world who likes them this much (see also: Aunt Wu), but I'm still happy.
* Women were actually fairly well represented in the Fire Nation army. I'm impressed.
* By the same token, relative percentage of girls in Aang-tachi has just plummeted. Guys, you know I love you, you know I love what you do, but I still gotta say: needs moar girl powr plz.
* Also, Haru, what is with that facial hair. It does nothing for me.
* Socchan's predictions time!
--- Aang-tachi (probably with Zuko by that point) are going to find out where Iroh is via the White Lotus people.
----- I would not be surprised if Ursa is there, too. Or at least with a branch of the WLers.
------- If Uncle and Ursa are in the same place, I don't expect to see him for a while.
--------- I'm still pretty sure we'll see Ursa eventually, though.
--- The next episode is likely going to be devoted to developing group dynamics, whether or not Zuzu joins them.
----- I wouldn't be surprised if there's a certain emphasis on Aang and Katara, and their potentially changing relationship, which is an entity entirely besides the "Aang-tachi gets three new members" thing.
* I. Kinda can hardly wait to see Zuko and Sokka not getting along. I will find it hilarious and wonderful.
* I also hope we'll get more background on the Southern Water Tribe. Wanna know what Katara's mom was like! So far we've only heard a few things that she used to do, and seen her once from the back. Needs moar info!
* Dude, Ursa. The hell did you see in Ozai, anyhow? Also, he and Azula are ttly two peas in a pod. Totally.
* There is definitely some sort of ant/arctic armadillo-wolf in Avatar-verse. Why would there be so much wolf symbolism if not?
Though if you put it together with the water and moon linkage, I'm totally expecting someone on my friends list/someone my f'list trusts to write the "Waterbenders = Werewolves!!1!one!" AU. Which I will not touch with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole if someone I don't trust does it, because wow, so much potential to go wrong there. Especially if it's not handled with a light touch. And the potential Firebenders = Reverse(?) Vampires stuff as well. You know, forget I ever mentioned it. Not like I have good equivalents for Earthbenders or Airbenders or anything. Unless it's like firebenders = weredragons and airbenders = werebison and earthbenders = werebadgermoles or something. And even that's pushing it.
* I was actually not surprised about Zuzu using the lightning deflection technique in this episode! Okay, I'll admit I thought he was going to use it against his sister, and he still may, but I did figure out that he was going to use it for something important a while ago. I also wouldn't be surprised if he can (learn to) bend lightning himself now, since he's less, mmm, polarized. I'll have to review the second season first to be sure, though.
* What's with all this banishment of the royal family when they do things you disapprove of, guys. I mean, you gotta figure out eventually that it's not always a good idea. Maybe that's why Iroh was locked in prison this time?
* Re: timing of eclipse (in the season) and hot air balloons: Who called it? My brother called it, that's who! Eat it, losers! I'm sorry, I didn't mean that, I just don't get to be smug about stuff like this very often, please come back.
* When Azula was encased in rock and the Dai Li agents broke her out? I totally thought for a minute that she was drawing power from the volcano to break out of the rock herself. (It's ttly canon that firebenders can draw power from volcanos and comets and stuff guyz.) I guess that's not the case, though! And it is symbolically sunshine that enables firebending. Or something.
* Okay, I had to love the tank-i-pedes. And the submarines.
* GUYS GUYS, IT'S THE BOULDER, THE BOULDER IS BACK, AND THIS TIME HE'S FIGHTING ALONG SIDE A SMALL BLIND GIRL! THIS TOTALLY, excuse the pun, ROCKS!!! Also, hi Hippo ♥
* First thought on the Mechanist telling everyone to get out their eclipse glasses: "The goggles, they do nothing!" Well no, not really, but I had to say it somewhere.
* Things I hope to see in the near future! More Gran Gran backstory. C'mon guys, she's a badass old lady! I'll bet money that was her we always saw next to the bloodbender in the flashbacks in 3x08. You know her story's cooler than is being let on. (Though this now brings me to wonder if she isn't also a White Lotus member... Probably not, but uh. As long as I'm going out on a limb with crazy theories, I might as well run the gamut, right?)
Also, I wanna know more about Katara's mom. We've only ever heard a few stories and seen her from the back, it's time we got a good look at her!
* I don't hope to see more stuff about Iroh's past, because I know it's gonna happen and that we're going to get a lot of questions answered (and probably at least a few more raised). I do, however, anticipate it.
Aaaand those are all the thoughts I can muster on the episodes at the moment. Anyone who wishes to link me to their own discussion posts re: this "special" is now more than welcome to do so.
Up next: get pictures of mistletoe, buy tofu for rat mix, go home and work on family and personal Christmas cards. Also probably prezzies.

Date: 2007-12-02 04:47 am (UTC)Except the hoping Suki is alive part, but we all know I never liked her XD. I don't hope she's dead, of course, but I'm not holding my breath.

Date: 2007-12-02 10:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, I know ;) Though even if I didn't like her I'd want to know how she was doing, if only to forestall the tidal wave of "After Suki's death, [Character] comforts Sokka [possibly with sex]" fics. "After Suki dumps him" just seems like less of a cheap shot to me, yanno?
