My mother's a special ed teacher, so the r-word is banned from my household, as well... (SHE SLAPPED BIZ FOR SAYING IT ONCE. ...actually she's slapped most of my friends for it... MY MUM IS SO ABUSIVE \o/) But being that my mother and I didn't get along very well for the longest time, I got in the habit of using it whenever she wasn't around, merely out of spite for her. And it's a hard habit to break :(b
God, I so feel you on verbal habits D: I lucked out on the r-word, in that my mom shamed me out of it the very first time I used it, but uh. I've still got a ways to go on my own ._.a Aarrrrgh, must find good replacement for slang usage of "lame"...!
... Man, I never even realised that lame could be viewed the same way. Probably because "lame" isn't really used all that commonly in any context other than the slang usage anymore.
I'm sort of a huge hypocrite about word usage in this way, though. I'm gay, but i throw around "oh i am so gay for [whatever]", and call things gay in a mocking way (never in exchange for "stupid", but...) and call my gay husband a fag (he calls me a dyke, though, so we consider it balanced) all the time (FOR FURTHER EXAMPLE, SEE KEYWORDS!). Yet I'll jump down people's throats for being homophobes or using "gay" interchangeably with "stupid"... Though maybe it's like the idea of black people saying "nigger" as opposed to white people saying it?
I DUNNO words are weird, and i have very weird opinions on word usage (for example, i am very casual with swearing, because i don't see any weight behind words like "fuck" -- they're just words. letters arranged in a way that i find make an appealing sound to express my emotions -- be it anger, frustration, excitement... I've never quite been able to adequately explain my views on "offensive" language :\
I know! And then RaceFail '09 happened, and I started paying attention to stuff, and yeah. I mean, I know it isn't used that way very often these days, and I'd prefer to think of it as shorthand for "lamentable", but. How many physically disabled people and their loved ones feel the same?
Yeah, that's. More of a grey zone? Word reclamation is weeeeird like that. I would also say that using "gay for" as code for "head over heels for" is 100x less offensive than using "gay" as code for "stupid", etc. Likewise, lovingly offensive nicknames, though those I figure are more easily censored? IDK. And swearing I tend to be pretty okay with, too, though if you're swearing around kids, it should be because their parents are okay with it. Guess who works with elementary school kids for a living? ME, THAT'S WHO! 8D
I don't want to say that the intent behind words doesn't count, since not meaning to hurt someone doesn't make them less hurt, but I'd say that intended meaning of the word is definitely a considering factor, I guess? Just. Using something a person can't change as an insult doesn't sit right with me.
