CW: Miscarriage, death
Sep. 5th, 2019 09:37 pmThis post is partly to keep y'all up-to-date, and partly to let folks know that my emotions may be a bit all-over-the-place for a while, and that I'll be even less interested in fictional unhappy family situations than usual.
Unfortunately, it seems it will be a while longer before I'll be an aunt.
My brother originally made the announcement that his wife, my sister-in-law and a very awesome person, was expecting on Father's Day of this year. He invited us all to brunch that day; I couldn't make it; the invite was last-minute, and I work pretty much every Sunday, so I only heard that evening about how he gave my dad a Father's Day card with a card for himself inside.
It was a little too early to tell anyone else, so I had to wait to explain to a coworker who was very belligerent on my behalf that he hadn't thought to invite us out more than a day in advance. I could absolutely forgive him for being so excited.
Everything went to hell this week. My sister-in-law's father died late last week, and the funeral is on Saturday, several hours out of town. She and my brother were planning to head out there earlier today, but she started having bad cramps on Monday, and they continued through the week. She went to the hospital each day, and, if I recall correctly, on Wednesday they elected to keep her there.
Around 2pm today, Benjamin was born at twenty weeks, at least two weeks earlier than the youngest viable fetus on record. My brother and sister-in-law gave him the middle name "Stubborn-As-Hell", because he held on for a good two hours after entering the world, but was ultimately unable to shatter world records. He's being cremated, and at least some of his ashes will be buried with his late grandfather.
My heart goes with you, little Benjamin. I hope you and your grandfather have lots of fun together.

Date: 2019-09-06 03:30 am (UTC)A few years ago my cousin's baby was stillborn at 8 months and my cousin nearly died. Our society likes to paper over how much things like this still happen.
My sympathies to your whole family.
