In more 2020-playing-all-the-hits news...
One of my maternal uncles is/was experiencing organ failure. Mom, already stressed out at work from Covid and some interpersonal stuff, ended up quitting and driving down to Texas to see if she could visit him.
Unfortunately, not only was she unable to visit him, the day before she or her own mother might have gotten to see him in person (but just as likely would have been relegated to waving from the hospital parking lot, because fucking Covid), Mom slipped at a gas station and broke her shoulder. Having had enough there, she flew back to Iowa, leaving her car behind. Since my temperature checking job is over (for now?), Dad and I let her know that I would be available to fly down and drive her car back myself if she needed me to. I'd even started making mental plans for if I was going.
Then her younger sister said she'd do it, and would end up staying with us a day or two at the end of it before flying back home. I dumped the mental sketch of my plans and went to pick Mom up from the airport, not thinking anything more of it...
...until half an hour ago, when Mom told me her younger sister "chickened out", and asked if I'd still be up for the job.
(I wish I could say I was surprise by her younger sister's behavior, but uh. Not so much. She did the same thing with offering to write the eulogy for Mom's older sister. ...Mom's family has had some rough times.)
Anyway, I'm not sure exactly when I'm leaving, except it's probably sometime this week, just not tomorrow. (I've got an oil change appointment.) I'll be staying with Mom's mom for a few days, then driving for nine hours and staying with Mom's stepmom a few days, then driving another nine hours home (give or take).
Fun times!
