Animal not-quite encounter

Sometimes when I get home from work, I give in to Molly the dachshund-terrier mix's begging and take her out on a walk around the yard. Today was one of those days. Usually she goes tearing off wherever she last saw a chipmunk, dragging me behind her, with occasional stops to Sniff Deeply.
Today was one of the days I took her out. I noticed a bit of a weird noise while I was walking with her her—not too unusual; we're in the suburbs and near a creek and a forested park, not to mention the areas in the yard that Dad has basically let nature reclaim, so I'm less bothered by random animal noises than casually curious. On one of her stops in the back yard, I happened to notice a deer in the across-the-back neighbor's yard: A doe who had, up until noticing me and Molly, been in something of a hurry! After observing a bit (and doing what I could to encourage Molly to pay more attention elsewhere, though I'm not against a bit of urban deer chasing now and again), I eventually realized that the deer was the source of the noise! Its vocalization was a short, almost sharp, not-quite honking sound. I described it later to Mom as somewhere between a sheep's bleat and a goose's honk 😂
Anyway, while I've seen plenty of suburban deer in my time, especially around here, I do believe this is the first time I've heard one and known that's what I was hearing.
