Fandom Rats! (...Plus one)

I just finished the eleventh of my planned fannish rats, and feel the need to share all of them at once. Behold my nerdery!

These rats were originally slated to be "Dorky", but honestly, they could fit anywhere in the "Dorky/Geeky/Nerdy/Nostalgic" continuum.





I forced myself to limit things to a mere two lightsaber colors and one Rats Star Trek shirt style, but nothing could have prevented me from using the three standard Starfleet uniform colors.

These next ones were slated for Nostalgic, but they could also fill the same niche as the above:





I decided to stick all of the "Pondering the Orb" rats together, because why not!

Anyway, the Digimon Crest I have officially nicknamed the Crest of Rattitude. You're welcome.

Bonus rat: Chipper


With tremendous gratitude to my sister-in-law, who suggested a rat chipping away to form a statue for this mood, since my previous idea (a rat popping up out of a Pringles container) just didn't quite click for me. Bonus points, while not planned that way, this appears to also be the rat from Aggravated in a fight with Artistic, over what I can only imagine are creative differences 😂


I plan to show the main eleven of these off in their own post at moodthemeinayear as well; I haven't updated the image block list yet, since I also haven't decided which image to use for which mood yet, as discussed above 😛

Edit: My brain just caught up with me and I realized that rats doing the Vulcan salute (which itself is based on a Jewish blessing) might not be such a great idea, so I have removed the images from this post for the time being, and will reupload after I edit that out. Which will be after a nap.

Edit 2: Starfleet rats are back! They are now only waving.

Am I missing a visual detail? Rats telling someone to live long and prosper seems quite benign to me.

Leonard Nimoy based the gesture from a Jewish blessing; since the frickin' Nazis infamously compared Jewish people to rats, drawing rats doing what could well be a Jewish blessing is... probably not the best idea. I definitely do not want to be antisemitic, accidentally or otherwise, and doubly so with all the shit going on right now.

I should probably add the "Jewish blessing" context to the post.

...while I love the idea of SF-fannish-rats, I think you've provided an excellent range of references (as always). The Stargate Rat is so lovely! And the Sailor Moon! And Ratamari has the best name.

Thank you! There's probably other properties I could make rat-sonas for, but I figured that these ones were among the more recognizable.

The Stargate I straight up painted over a screencap of and then just threw a rat in there, like, "Hell yeah, going to rat planet to visit the rats!" The scale isn't exactly perfect (these are extreme ROUSs here), but if I'd made this one small enough to be even human-sized, we wouldn't have been able to see its cheerful wave! Only too late do I realize I missed the Stargate: Ratlantis pun...

Sailor Moon rat was a treat! I originally had her(?) doing the thing with both front paws and holding the moon wand with her tail, but went back and forth enough on whether to even include the moon wand enough that just having her hold it was easier 👍

I am 100% going to make the Ratamari one into an icon; I just need to look up the right font. (Na naaaaa, nanana na na na na, na Ratamari Nezumi...)

I am genuinely thinking about making this my new default icon. I may need to run a poll first, to see if any of my current followers are actually freaked out by cartoon rats, but still!

Yeah; I love the idea of it, and I feel like, if it were almost any other animal, it really would've added to the fandom fun! But not in this case, especially not being Jewish myself, and double especially not with the current political climate.

Edit: I should mention that the updated images are now posted; the rats are now waving, which I think is a decent compromise.
