It's done! Or, well, it was done half an hour ago. It then promptly become unfinished for a number of reasons, partly to do with my desire for perfection and the fact that I made the figures too tall so now I need to go in and re-apply the wax so it's about half a cm lower to keep the glass from distorting their heads, but mostly because hot glue really doesn't hold that well to wax. Don't get me wrong, there were totally advantages to that in the setup process, but there's definitely something to be said for the toothpick application method.
Anywho, pics!

This was very much a learning experience, and while it was quite frustrating at times, it was usually a good frustrating. (I don't care if that doesn't make sense, that's how it was. It felt good to be angry at this project, okay?)
Among the things I learned were:
* Fimo and Sculpy actually don't mix that well, if only because they have different cooking rules
* Red and black polymer clay will smudge over EVERYTHING (used to good effect on Derek's face, but otherwise annoying; I had to paint over their shirts in the end)
* Puffy t-shirt paint is out; it peels and looks terrible
Not to mention everything else I learned about applying the wax to bottles (12 crayons, pour in layers, etc), since that's mostly about the figures.
All things considered, I'm fairly pleased with it. Not pleased enough to leave it like that forever, but pleased enough to be done with it this month already, sheesh! The fact that the contest deadline is Thursday may have something to do with this as well.
Which, speaking of, I'm off to e-mail these pics in as my entry :3b Wish me luck! And then consider commissioning one or more of these from me, so I can get more practice in. Though I definitely need to put some thought into pricing first...
Edit: Second place, w00t!

Date: 2013-02-27 05:46 am (UTC)I'm so glad it worked out, and I totally get 'good frustrating.' We crazy people who put things in bottles... It's all about saying "AAARRRGGGHHH!" a couple hundred times before the final "Aah, yes!" with a self-satisfied grin attached.
Best of luck with the competition!
