All About Detective Conan
Feb. 4th, 2005 02:32 pmThe conversation eventually drifted back to German manga and how France has so much more of DC translated that Germany and how I should talk to Marie about getting the manga to me since I'd pay for it and stuff, and Nathan wanted to know more about Detective Conan.
I started telling him more about it (he knows the basic premise) but there really wasn't enough time left to cover everything, so I told him I'd just do a post on LJ with links to info sites and so forth. I'd been meaning to do it anyway, in case there was anyone reading this who wanted to know more, but now I have an extra excuse.
Without further ado, here's a bunch of places you can go to find out more about DC/MK.
Only One Truth: Orla's Detective Conan site, the place where I got started on the series. I'd been following Jaelle and Orla's fics for a while, and I was bored one day, so I thought I'd check it out, learn some stuff about the series, and be able to read more fic. I never expected that it would pull me in like a black hole. Only One Truth has a summary of the basic plot, character info, fan works, occasionally challenges, and links (though, sadly, some are broken). Again, this is where I got started, but it doesn't say where I'll end up ^_~. Very good for beginners, but beware of spoilers.
Tantei Kid: Tantei Kid is a wonderfully comprehensive site. I use it a lot when I'm looking for specific storylines, like when certain characters appear. It has a lot of wonderful basic information both about the storyline and about characters, including name spellings (kanjis) which I found quite useful. Well, maybe not useful; more like just something to drool over and look up the meanings to ^^;. It does a masterful job of avoiding spoilers for those fans who don't want them, though, as pointed out by the webmaster, it's pretty much impossible to do if you want good character pages. A very good site for small details. Sadly, it is infrequently updated.
Detective Conan's Mystery File: My first scanlation site ^_^. Okay, that's a blatant lie; my first scanlation site was for Ranma 1/2. But this was my first Detective Conan scanlation site, and therefore, precious to me. Basic info, some scans (with storyline info, which I value) and, unfortunately, broken links. The webmistress here also has a Kaitou Kid site, but bandwidth runs out _incredibly_ fast there ^^;. Still, quite friendly overall; a good place to start. BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SERIES RECOMMENDED.
MANGAviewer Type 3: Another scanlation site. _Very_ comprehensive. I mean, wow, they have almost everything here. Click on the little 'Detective Conan' sign in the upper left hand corner to get a menu of comics you can read online or download. Click on the little square in the upper right hand corner to go full-screen (or back). Lots of links and mirrors and if youkeep an eye on the chat logs near the bottom you may find some interesting stuff. Even has scanlations of files from a few of the later/est volumes (though it's short at least one for the KK story in 44 ;_;).
Anna's DC Homepage: A nice little site with info, scans and a few nice (working!) links. Very nicely done, nothing much happening with it now though.
Detective Conan Manga: A nice little site with some scans and links.
Added 3/24/05: Icka's Kaitou Kid Reference Page: Officially a reference site for fan authors, this is also useful from a reader's perspective. Lots of little bits and pieces of information to help you get in-jokes.
FOR THOSE OF YOU LOOKING TO READ DC FIC AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
It's kinda my guilty pleasure to read fics for series I know next to nothing about or have almost no access to canon of ^^; Being, uh, experienced at this, I would like to make a suggestion:
Read the character descriptions and story info _several_ _times_. Pretty much for every site that has character info here, read the character info. It'll help you get a handle on them sooner, and you'll have a better idea of who the author is talking about. Don't be afraid to go back and re-read character info in the middle of a story if you have no idea who someone is. It will _help_.
I'd continue this, but I'm running low on time, and GAME club is coming up ^^; More later.
