soc_puppet: Words "Humorless Feminist" in pink (Humorless Feminist)

Some of you may have noticed that my interest and involvement in Sci-Fail has been going on for a while now. Back in the first half of the year, there was the spectacular horrible that was RaceFail '09; at the beginning of the month, there was the Mammoth Manthology (which I hadn't yet touched on, actually); and, most recently (that I'm aware of) has been GateFail. (There have been others that were less publicized, but still horribly offensive.)

What all of this together means is that I've been thinking more deeply about what I actually like in Speculative Fiction as a whole. Not just the diversity (or lack thereof), but also the stories I like to see told. And the series I tend to enjoy on Siffy seem to follow a certain pattern:

* Eureka (still mostly fun, though definitely a few issues)
* First two Stargate things (later seasons less than early seasons)
* Warehouse 13 (less and less the more of it I watched)
* Farscape (what little I've seen of it)

Basically, there's an established setting, and then Weird Shit Happens, and Our Heroes have to Go Investigate and/or Figure It Out. There's some overarching plot, but it does advance, and everything's not doom and gloom all the time. Survival: Yes, important, but protecting other people? More important.

There's also a pretty firm connection to Earth Today, regardless of how much of it takes place here. I mostly like this for the geeky references and bad cultural-centric jokes that can be snuck in and played with. (Jokes and humor in general are pretty important to me-the-viewer.)

UST is nice, 'specially if there's Gay UST. Horrible, horrible, bad science is almost required (but I'm more than willing to overlook its absence in the presence of Good Science).

The idea here is, I take the stuff I like from the crappy shows, shove it together with stuff I'd like to see more of done the right way, and I basically have a recipe for the Perfect-For-Me Speculative Fiction Series.

So, while I'm already mostly over Siffy, finding a different series that fits my basic taste profile would help cut the cord, as it were. Sadly, I don't think I'm ever going to find a show that fits all my diversity requirements (Avatar comes the closest, but did, sadly, fall down on GLBTQIA, Fat Acceptance, and Incidentals-who-are-ladies - although I can't say I expected much from Nick re: the first especially), and especially not while also fitting my interesting-premise profile. Even if I did find a show that works, it's doubtful it'd be on the few remaining cable channels we have.

I guess my next steps are to 1) search the internet, or 2) make my own.

Here's hoping that choice the first yields results before I'm forced to default to choice the second -_-a
