Aug. 14th, 2005 07:52 pmFinally managed to get some work done on those Anniversary Challenge fics. With any luck, knock on wood, I'll be able to have them done by the time they're a week late. So, here's hoping!
So there was this butterfly this afternoon. It was a cabbage buttefly (you know, one of those white ones; the yellow ones are sulfer butterflies) and it was doing the most absurd things on an ivy plant. It kept jerking around and folding its wings downwards like a moth would. At first I thought it had become drunk/horribly confused and was laying eggs there (they're called 'cabbage' butterflies for a reason, ya see), but when I got closer it turned out that its proboscus (sp? the tongue/nose tube thing that it uses to eat) was stuck in one of the itty-bitty ivy flowers. I did what I could to get it unstuck: I plucked the flower and started disecting it by hand. By the time I got it into little pieces I could see just how stuck it was. It wasn't pretty. When the remaining flower piece was small enough, the butterfly took off; it didn't get far, though. I caught up to it again and tried to trim down the flower again. Unfortunately, I ended up trimming off the end of its proboscus ;_; I felt very guilty after that. Butterflies can't survive without probosci, and I didn't know if it was irreperably damaged or not. Then I felt annoyed for feeling guilty; it was just a butterfly for Pete's sake, and a common one at that! Who cares? Well, I did. I felt really bad that it might die a pathetic or useless death because of me--never mind that I had only been trying to save it, or that it might have died an even more pathetic death stuck to a flower. Heck, I would've felt better if it had been eaten by a spider! I'm rather fond of spiders, after all, and that would seem a less useless death. Plus, most butterflies probably don't survive that long; Luna moths, I know, only survive in a winged state for about five days. (This is probably part of what makes Monarchs so special, in addition to that whole flying cross-country/seasonal migration thing.)
Then I stubbed my toes, and it didn't seem so important anymore. Ouch. I abuse my feet way too much. Still, the rush of natural painkillers is occasionally helpful/nice/calming/etc.
Rising Stars of Manga volume 5 is supposed to be out now, but I can't find it anywhere ;_; My current hypothesis is that it wasn't selling very well, so all of my local bookstores dropped the series. (My previous one was that I got the date wrong; I believe I've disproved this, though I'm saving 'someone mis-typed it' as a last resort.) This means I'll probably have to ask them to order a copy for me, which means dealing with people >_< I'm not much of a people person (though I can fake it like no tomorrow). This is supported by my bad LJ commenting habits. F'LIST, I SWEAR I'M STILL HERE AND READING THINGS. I REALLY AM. I JUST DON'T TALK IN FEAR OF MAKING AN ASS OF MYSELF OR BUTTING IN WHEN I DON'T NEED TO OR SOMETHING and I'm shutting up now, really.
Anyway, no RSoM 5. Disappointment ;_; Bought a copy of Bizenghast to tide me over. (STFU! I like US-origin manga. It's an addiction D: ) It's pretty good :) The art's nice. I'm hoping a new volume will come out relatively soon, though I'm not holding my breath.
Leaving off here. Have more to talk about, but I've taken up enough space already, and I don't feel like cutting today for some reason.
