soc_puppetRemember how I was complaining a while ago about how I couldn't find that interlude I wanted to post? Well, last night, I finally got around to re-writing it--and then I found the first copy again -_- *sigh*

Summary: More unrepentant fluff. Shin'ichi adjusts to being a kid again.
Adjustments
It took Shin’ichi a few weeks to get used to his new appearance. The contacts Kuroba had given him hadn’t done more than change his eye color to a watery gray, in case there was a situation when he couldn’t use them. The glasses were something of a pain to remember to put on, take off and care for. His hair was a little darker than it used to be, but again not by much, and it was shorter all over, so his permanent cowlick in the back blended in more. There were times when he’d look in the mirror and not recognize himself, though they rarely lasted more than a few seconds.
The size change was worse. Shin’ichi kept reaching for things and expecting to touch them before his hands were close enough. Shelves and doorknobs were suddenly a lot higher off the ground, and stairs were more of a challenge than he could ever remember them being. And everything was heavier. Shin’ichi remembered thinking that it was like going through growth spurts again, only this time in reverse, and it was terrible. If it weren’t for the boundless childlike energy he’d gotten with the package, Shin’ichi didn’t think he’d have been able to handle everything.
Worst of all, though, was not being able to do things. He still helped out on heists, though he couldn’t take as active a role as he once had; Shin’ichi flat-out refused to be left out, and thankfully his friends hadn’t argued, though Ran looked like she might have wanted to. Other than his friends, though, no one listened to him anymore or took him seriously. To them he was just a kid and didn’t know anything. He was starting to remember what had frustrated him so much about Kuroba’s case when he was nine.
Still, there were some advantages to being a kid again. The cute factor got him a lot of sweets from indulgent old ladies, the kids’ fare on everything was better, and smaller hands were better for delicate work. The best part, though, was holding hands with Ran. The two of them would walk everywhere together, hand-in-hand, and no one thought anything of it. Shin’ichi’s hands would remain warm for hours after they let go.

Decided in the end that I liked the first version better after all ^_^ which didn't surprise me. Needed to get Shin'ichi used to his new body before the next chapter, and this seemed like the best way to do it. Next time, more Heiji and Hakuba.
