Fic: Tangled Lines
Saguru stared at the card in the mailbox, a sense of dread forming somewhere in his stomach. He had sent the card off more than a week ago to ensure that it would arrive on time, but it had been returned to him. Now, here it was, three days after the event, stuck in England. There was really nothing left to do, except--
Except...
Saguru looked from the card to the phone and sighed. There was no use for it. He hated being late, but he hated being rude even more. Swallowing his pride, Saguru crossed the room and dialed an international number.
The phone rang once; twice; three times--
"Hello, Kuroba residence; Kaito speaking."
"Kuroba?"
"Hakuba-kun?" Kuroba's surprise was audible through the phone.
"Listen, I'm sorry I'm late," Saguru said in a rush, "and I don't want you to think I actually care all that much, but--well, happy birthday, Kuroba."
For a moment there was nothing but a stunned silence on the other end. Saguru frowned. "I'll have you know that international calls aren't cheep," he warned.
"Oh, right," Kaito replied. "Thanks, Hakuba-kun."
It was small and quiet, but Saguru thought he could hear Kaito's smile. "You're welcome."
