Summary: Shin'ichi and Ran and the evolution of their wishes.
Fic: Paper Wishes
For Shin'ichi, Tanabata started like any other day. He woke and dressed as usual, eating a simple breakfast to tide him over until lunch. Around eight o'clock Ran knocked on his door. They smiled and exchanged greetings before making a trip to the local shrine together. They had been doing this since they were eight.
At the shrine they payed their respects, then went to make their wishes. Shin'ichi glanced quickly at Ran to make sure she was busy before writing his wish down. In careful lettering he wrote, 'I wish Ran would go out with me', then tied the paper to a piece of bamboo. Not far away, Ran finished writing her own wish down and tied it on the branch in front of her. Their business done, the two of them started home again.
"So," Shin'ichi asked, falsely casual, "What did you wish for? A boyfriend?"
Ran turned red and glared at him. "No," she returned, "I wished I would win my next karate tournament."
"Oh," Shin'ichi said, hiding his disappointment. "Well, you're pretty good; you'll probably get it. All that muscle has to be good for something!"
"Oh yeah?" Ran shot back. "Well, what did you wish for, mister hot-shot detective? More mysteries to solve?"
"Less crime, of course!" He grinned. "Less crime means fewer criminals!"
She punched him lightly in the side in retaliation. "You never grow up," she groused.
Shin'ichi went to bed that night thinking about wishes.

For Conan, Tanabata started like any other day. He woke and dressed as usual, eating breakfast with Ran and Kogoro, acting chipper about things in general. Around eight o'clock, Sonoko knocked on the door. She and Ran smiled and hugged, and Sonoko ruffled Conan's hair, which he hated anyone but Ran doing, before the three of them made the trip to the local shrine together. Since Shin'ichi was 'away solving a case', Sonoko had volunteered to keep Ran and Conan company.
At the shrine they payed their respects, then got pieces of paper and brushes to record their wishes. Conan glanced at Ran and Sonoko to make sure they were occupied before writing his own wish. In careful letters he wrote, 'I wish I can return to normal soon', then folded his paper quickly and got Ran to help tie it to a piece of bamboo. After this she and Sonoko tied their own wishes up. Thier business done, the trio started for home.
"What did you wish for, Sonoko?" Ran asked politely.
Sonoko smiled enthusiastically. "A boyfriend, of course!" Ran smiled nervously back. "How 'bout you, Ran?"
Ran blushed and looked away. "I-- I..."
Sonoko's grin turned absolutely gleeful. "Did you wish for Shin'ichi to propose?" she teased.
"Sonoko!" Ran exclaimed, scandalized.
"It's okay, Ran-neechan," Conan chirped, interrupting Sonoko's taunting session. "I'm sure we wished for the same thing!"
Ran smiled warmly down at him and ruffled his hair. "Of course, Conan-kun. Now," she said, changing the subject abruptly, "Who's up for ice cream?"
Conan was thinking about wishes again as he went to bed that night. The more he thought about it, the more similar his last two wishes seemed.
