Summary: Edward notices the differences

materia_indigo, who requested "A sweet and fluffy, PG Hei/Ed fic"
Notes: I ended up taking the easy route and went around characterizing Heidrich. I'll do characterization later.
Fic: Not the Same
Ed knew that Heidrich and Al weren't the same person in the same way he knew that his world and this one weren't the same: intelectually, if not instinctively. He knew they weren't really the same person, but they were enough alike that sometimes the differences would throw Ed for a loop.
The worst part was body language. For all that Al had spent the better part of four years as a living suit of armor, he and Heidrich moved in much the same manner. It was enough to give Ed a headache on several occasions.
Still, Ed did his best to treat Heidrich--and any other alternate versions of people he knew back home--the same as he would anyone else. His worst slip-up came one day in the market.
He and Heidrich were crossing the street to see the new books that had gotten in recently--Heidrich more to keep Ed company than any personal interest--when Heidrich became distracted by something. Noticing his brother's alter wasn't behind him, Ed turned to see Heidrich standing in the middle of the street, staring off into space while a car came straight at him.
Ed dropped what he was carrying and ran out into the street on mis-matched legs, shouting something. The only thing he could think of was that he had to save his brother, he couldn't let Al get hurt again. He tackled Heidrich, rolling the two of them out of the car's path. Heidrich groaned and sat up, rubbing his head. "Thanks," he told Ed with a wince.
Ed grunted and got to his feet. Realizing his mistake, he wasn't very much in the mood to talk about the incident. "You're welcome."
"One thing, though. Who's Al?"
