Summary: Conan and Ayumi are following a trail of breadcrumbs.

phantom_kaito, who requested something with Conan and Ayumi for her birthday (which I am a day late for ^^a At least it's not as bad as Hakuba? I'm more than a month late for his).
Fic: Bread Winner

"Okay, Ayumi, are you ready?" Ayumi nodded. Conan smiled at her. "Okay, go for it."

At once, Ayumi opened her mouth and squinted her eyes shut, letting out an ear-piercing wail. "Waaaaah! Niichan!"

Conan's face donned a mask of panic. "Arisa-chan? Are you okay?"

Ayumi continued to fake cry. "Niichan, I'm hungry!"

Conan worriedly looked around. "I'm sorry, Arisa-chan, but we already ate all of our snacks and I didn't bring any money. Oh, what should I do?"

A middle-aged woman paused near them. "Oh, you poor dears! Here, I have just the thing." She reached into her bag and pulled out a package of rolls. "Will this do?"

Conan accepted it hesitantly. "I... think so. Arisa-chan?" He held out a roll to the girl. "Arisa-chan, you can have one of these if you want."

Slowly Ayumi stopped crying and reached out to take the roll. She frowned and pretended to take a bite. Her jaw worked a few times, and her face lit up. "It's good!"

Conan relaxed. "That's good. Now, thank the nice lady, Arisa-chan."

Ayumi smiled blindingly. "Thank you, obaachan!"

The woman smiled back. "You're welcome. Don't spoil your dinners, now."

"We won't," Conan assured her. "C'mon, Arisa-chan, let's get home." The two of them ran off down the street and around a corner where they stopped to rest. Conan grinned at Ayumi. "Great job back there!"

Ayumi giggled. "Thanks, Conan-kun! It was fun!"

"Well, good, 'cuz we've got three more packages of rolls to go." He sighed as Ayumi skipped off ahead of him. The things he did to solve murder mysteries. He could only hope that Ayumi wouldn't grow up to be a con artist after all this.

Again, sorry for the lateness =_= It also sorta feels like Ayumi knows Conan's secret in this, but I'm going to blame it on Conan going into 'case mode', which the kids are bound to have noticed. Hope you liked!
