A Quire Story
Oct. 19th, 2008 09:40 pmHey kids, it's story time! Today's story: How Mom left the church choir and joined the Quire (eastern Iowa's GLBT chorus)!
Once upon a time, Mom was in our (Catholic) church's choir. She was having an okay time, singing with everyone, though what she really wanted was to maybe have a more prominent role in a song one day (not a solo - she didn't want to sing alone - but maybe a duet or trio or something). But time passed and she didn't get one, and she didn't get one, and she still didn't get one. Then one day, a new member joined the church choir, and the director joked that the condition for his joining was that he had to do a solo. Mom heard this, and decided that if she was ever going to get her more prominent song role, she was going to have to ask for it.
When she approached the director with her request, however, she was denied. The problem, the director said, was that Mom couldn't sing very well. Mom, who had been in choruses since she was very young indeed, promptly quit the choir, since she wasn't having fun any longer and didn't even have the hope of a minor starring role to look forward to.
Time passed, and though Mom missed group singing, she wasn't going back to the church choir. Then one day she learned something very important about the Quire: they accepted straight allies as well as GLBT singers! She promptly contacted a member of the Quire and learned when they were next accepting members, and that January she and her daughter
socchan went to their first Quire rehearsal, joined up, and never looked back.
TONIGHT:
Mom: So, the other day, Dad and I got a call from the church choir asking us to join.
Me: XD And you were like, "I already have prior commitments," right?
Mom: Yes. I told them, when it comes to music, I'm gay.
I love my mom ♥
IN OTHER NEWS, I need to get off my lazy butt and finish my app, raaar.
