Poetry thoughts

I kinda wanna write some poetry, specifically in a format that starts with seven words and goes for seven lines, losing one word with each line. (Is that an officially named/acknowledged format somewhere? If so, what's it called?) But then I started overthinking things and now I feel pretentious while pondering, so.

Time to try and kill the part of me that cringes, I guess. Or at least do fierce battle with it.

Thousands of years of agricultural science yields
a new branch grafted safely on
Our pact with the earth
and with each other
Zested and juiced
I taste
lemon

This is not the pretentious one I was pondering writing, for the record.

Tentatively calling this format "countdown poetry" until I learn it has another name already.

Ah, thank you 😊 I should say that my whole poetry-related train of thought was inspired by work having a poetry contest for employees, which I didn't get anything finished in time for 😂 But I took the fact that I still wanted to write the idea I had as a sign that I definitely should (which is why this poem is about growing, preparing, and eating food). We'll see where other ideas take me.

I came up with it the other day and was like, "Surely someone has to have done this before?" I'm going to call it "countdown" format until/unless I find out it has a name already. (I thought about calling it seven-by-sevens, but with countdown, you can change the number of lines without accidentally invoking Nazis with an eight line version.)

It's hard to wrangle the brain weasels and keep them from gnawing on me over certain topics, but I'll do my best!

I have no idea if this has a name, but it's a really fun concept! I like your poem, and I hope you write the pretentious one too. Bet it's great :)

Thanks 😊 I've been finding myself starting with the last few words and working backwards to the start, which is not a bad way to do it, I think. I'll probably share more in the future. And once I do, I'll be able to yell at my brain weasels: "See? The world didn't end! Take that!"
