I don't imagine that I could pull of wig-making myself, and I'm fairly certain they're pretty expensive, so I usually try for a character whose hair is pretty close to my own. And other features, when possible. I do make my own costumes (when possible), though, and that includes making up my own patterns ^^a I can see fairly well without my glasses, so I'm not planning to resort to contacts unless I need to change my eye color in some extreme way.
Sounds like a relatively easy costume to collect. Working with things you have = a very good way to go about things. Second-hand stores are good for cheap clothing, though department stores are probably better for finding something closer to exactly what you want.
