Hooray, posting time! ...Well, maybe hooray. Mostly hooray? Sorta hooray?
Anywho. Pictures of that tree what fell:

From the upstairs window, inside.

Back yard, facing the pond.

Back yard, more or less the same but angled more towards the house.

Back yard, the tree from "underneath".

The tree.

The source tree. (I am told that the black stuff is rot, not char.)

Back yard, facing the downed tree, angled towards the house. Tree vs power lines: power lines LOSE.
Item two on the list of things to go over. Remember that moped I got? Well, after a very helpful info dump, we looked it over and it appears to be leaking from the gas tank, which makes it more or less of a wash. Talked it over with the family, and we made the decision to attempt to get our money back for it. (Tomas was all up for investing in a new moped with me up until I pointed out that, come August, we'd be living in different places. Apparently, that hadn't occurred to him.)
Mom went on mission: attempt to get refund today (I think? possibly yesterday), and had not only no luck, but was the recipient of Much Rudeness. As a result, vindictiveness was fueled in her, and we had the moped removed from our driveway as abandoned property. It is my next mission in life to visit the Bicycle Library, and see about getting a non-motorized bike. I have no doubt it will be great exercise, cost no gas money, and will make me sore and miserable very often when I first get it. This will not stop me from attempting to become transportationally independent! *Rosie pose*
Item three on the list! I've begun work on the Avatar prompts (still open!) I collected the other day, and have so far finished ...one! Which is better than zero, so shut up. Still plugging (rather slowly) away, will post when I have more than one.
And I think that's about it, really.
abarero has a nice post on the interpretive meaning of gen fic here which I found interesting, but which you have to be friended to read, and I've been having weird thoughts about ambushing people on my f'list with recycled manga purses, but am unsure as to how they would be received, among other things. So I guess that really is it.

Date: 2008-07-24 03:37 am (UTC)I think my post could be renamed: Fandom: Stripping our Gen-Fic of Pairings Since the Ship Wars Began. The more I think about it, the more Fandom's love/hate relationship with certain pairings seems to be the source of it.

Date: 2008-07-25 06:30 pm (UTC)That wouldn't surprise me, actually.

Date: 2008-07-24 04:07 am (UTC)Is the whole tree going to be cut down? And if not, don't forget to put a sealent of some sort over that gapping wound to keep out rot and insects.
Manga purse! I still need to make myself one of those. I have a couple of sampler from Tokyopop and ADV. I can canabalize them without ruining perfectly good manga (though it might be fun to order a bunch of used ones and make them into purses).

That's what Mom tore apart for my first purse, yes :3 It is totally possible!

Date: 2008-07-26 02:25 pm (UTC)If you are unable to get a refund, you might consider
(1) Fuel up the moped, start the engine (despite the fuel leak) and see whether you can ride for a couple of blocks. If so, this certifies that the engine works.
(2) Take everything on the moped apart. Well, don't take things apart below component level, but remove engine, carburetor, fenders, luggage rack, speedometer, handlebars, mirrors, control cables, wheels, etc. and take digital photos of everything. Then list all the individual pieces (and don't forget the frame) for sale on eBay. Other people are trying to keep old, old Puch mopeds running.

Date: 2008-07-26 07:52 pm (UTC)Too late >_< It's already been hauled away by the police. Otherwise, I'd probably consider it now, as it did tend to run fairly well for a ride or two at a time.
