Rambling on Writing
May. 10th, 2010 10:02 pmWargh, that was a rather long break there -_-a Understandable reasons, really, but still. Truthfully, there was stuff I wanted to post about earlier, but social anxiety prevented me. (I may go into more detail on this later, but more likely not.) I guess I'll just plunge right in :)
Started working on my story for
kinked \o/ (I actually started earlier, but, well, Stuff Happened, blah blah, I didn't post about it.) Anyhow, I've started, and it's going... *laughs* Well, it's a writing project; I'm rather glad just that it's going at all, however slowly or jerkily.
Anyhow, I'm getting that thing! That thing where the characters flesh themselves out as I write the story. This is basically totally new to me! When I went into this idea, I knew I was going to be doing a lot of "cross that bridge when I come to it" sort of stuff, and that my bare bones outline/summary thing was almost desperately spare, but somehow I didn't realize A) the extent to which this was true, and B) that this would apply to my characters as well as to my plot. It's a fascinating learning experience, I think.
Let's face facts here: my background is mostly in fan fiction, which is an entirely different animal from original fiction. With fanfic, the characters and worldbuilding were all already set up for me. Even with AUs, I rarely (if ever) ventured too far away from home territory, and even if I did, canon was there with certain "rules" for me to rely on: Character A and Character B would meet, no matter what, even if I wasn't sure what their relationship would be like; I wanted Event Y to happen in some parallel form, because the AU scenario meant that the original form wasn't quite right for the job, but my overarching plot demanded details from it; and so forth. Fan fiction had anchors to it that were already established, but with original fiction I have to come up with my own. It's a very different balancing act, and any satisfaction I get from original fiction being all mine is offset by the satisfaction I get in fanfic from running into familiar faces in unfamiliar places. (I hope that made sense somehow ^^a)
What I'm trying to get at here, is that it's a new experience for me to see a world being built up around the small details I put in place. Seeing how the characters seem almost to know more about themselves than I do is just mind-boggling (in more ways than one - is this what it means when a character is "talking" to you, or when one takes on a life of their own? I mean, I know that this is all coming from me somehow, but to know all of this and at the same time not know that I know it is a little disconcerting for me yet). It's a bit of a rush, too, and will likely be something of an anxiety trip as well once I get around to thinking of it that way.
I've got more philosophical-y thoughts in me on the nature of fanfic vs. origific, and how writing each is different to me, but I think I'll leave that for now in favor of a bit of shop XD I'm at least half way done with what will either be the first or second scene in the story, which means soon (hopefully) I'll be starting on the second/third - after which is either the continuation of the second/third scene, or a third/fourth scene, and after that I have only the vaguest idea what will happen :/ I suppose that's part of the fun of writing too, though ^^a I still hope I figure something out by the time I get there @_@ I need more "middle" in the middle!
