I heard somewhere along the line that it's going to be a lot more tightly packed, plot-wise, than the first series? I'm a bit behind on my news, actually, but the last I knew of it, ATLOK is supposed to be a shorter series than ATLA, so they have to trim out all the "filler"; I'm inclined to believe that's why the first two episodes have their own distinct stories rather than a two-parter to start the series off.

I wouldn't be surprised if they drop more hints in; we'll probably have to go to The Promise to find out most of the in-depth details. We did get some detail drops about how Toph's daughter is running the police force, who are all metalbenders, and Katara mentioned that Sokka's dead, IIRC. (I will totes lol forever if it turns out Jet's been secretly alive in a cave for all these years, with no memories prior to fighting what's-his-face. ~~And then it will be time for ALL the fanfic! 8D~~)

Yeah, I can't imagine that punching spiritual things in the face would do much good, lol. As a parallel, it'll be interesting to see how spirituality is integrated into the modern Republic City, which has become thoroughly industrialized.

I also love how Korra is so unapologetically a teenager. She's definitely at that rebellious stage! (Tenzin's oldest daughter's comment about making no promises not to be a rebellious teenager cracked me up.)

Other things I'm wondering: Who were her other bending teachers? Will we get to meet them or hear more about them? And why aren't Tenzin's siblings airbending masters? Were they not airbenders (though Katara's conversation with Tenzin's as yet unnamed wife suggested they were/are), or did they just not achieve mastery? And just who is Lin BeiFong's other parent? Things to find out!
